squid proxy's have lists of ports it's safe to connect to, these usually are fairly strict on privileged ports (< 1024). Your problem smells like Netscape & Conqueror object to the proxy port of 21, can you alter the proxy port to an unprivileged one like 6589, and get ANALOGX to server requests on that? An alternative would be to proxy using wwwoffle, apache or squid, depending on whether you have dial-up, web server running already, or need a multi-user always on web cache (use port 8080 for all settings). Is a windows proxy (allbeit Freeware) going to have been tested with other browers but IE4/5 & Win Netscrape? All though you think you have no firewall complicating things, it's still worth ruling it out by running 'ipchains -L', and when you ftp, have you tried both active and passive? Browsers and caches usually use passive, because it tends to be more firewall friendly. Rob

U're welcome :-)

Some vocabulaire: proxy Client(s) 192.168.0.xyz | | | proxy server 192.168.0.254 (analogX) listening on: HTTP Port 6588 FTP Port 21 (??) | | | internet (=inet) Does it look like this above? If yes, lets go on. It is unusal (I can be wrong but I havn't seen this yet) to have ftp port on a proxy server on tcp/21. Since tcp is a multiplexing protocol it can handle multiple connections on one port. Therefore a proxy usually listens only on one port, say 6588 or whatever. Now, you tell your analogX proxy to listen on 6588 for HTTP and FTP. The clients you tell to connect to 192.168.0.254 Port 6588 for HTTP and FTP. This should work.

Have you defined a default gateway on your clients? Check the connection between the proxy server and the proxy clients. How do they communicate?
