amavisd-sendmail.rpm SuSE8.1 Pro Setup
Hello list, I retrieved amavisd-sendmail.rpm (23-Oct-2002) from people/link/amavis/SuSE/8.1 for mail scanning incoming and outgoing mail on my new SuSE8.1 server running sendmail 8.12.6 coming with 8.1. I also retrieved the missing Perl-modules and changed the /etc/amavisd.conf go my virus-scann f-prot. A "rcamavis start" gives me: Starting virus-scanning for sendmail (amavis): starting amavis-milter failed starting amavisd done and in /var/log/messages Jan 14 16:04:02 imladris amavis-milter: amavis-milter: Unable to bind to port local:/var/run/amavis/amavis-milter.sock: No such file or direct ory Jan 14 16:04:02 imladris amavis-milter: amavis-milter: Unable to create listening socket on conn local:/var/run/amavis/amavis-milter.sock I must say that I have no clue what to do or where to look anymore (googling didn't take me further...). On my old system with SuSE7.3 I just installed the rpm of amavis-sendmail (non-daemon version) which nearly ran out of the box. Now I upgraded some memory in my server and I wanted to switch to amavisd (I also tried also the amavis-sendmail of 8.1, but somehow it didn't scan my mail). I also know that I should some more things about m4, sendmail and so on, but for time-saving I wanted to use the prepared RPM. Heeeelp! ;-) Please! -- Eat, sleep and go running, David Huecking. PRMs provided in the people directory are not official RPMs and not approved by QA. Or, in other words, RPMs in my people directory may not be well-tested or tested at all. Unfortunately, the 00INDEX file with the standard disclaimer "--> THESE ARE NOT OFFICIAL SuSE RPMs!!! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!" is missing for 8.1 The amavisd-sendmail.spec contains two errors, which have been fixed lately. Edit /etc/amavisd.conf and change $QUARANTINEDIR to /var/spool/vscan/virusmails (default is /var/virusmails, which is wrong) Create /var/run/amavis, owned by vscan:root and set permissions to 0700. Fixed RPMs will probably available as soon time permits, but my diploma thesis has a _much_ higher prio. best regards, Rainer Link (SuSE Labs) -- Rainer Link | SuSE Linux AG - The Linux Experts link@suse.de | Developer of A Mail Virus Scanner (www.amavis.org) www.suse.de | Founder OpenAntiVirus Project (www.openantivirus.org)
Thanks for your lightning fast answer! I know that the stuff from the /people-Directory is unofficial, but I sit here physically "far away" from my server at home and got no access to a SuSE8.1 install media. The ftp-version of 8.1 doesn't seem to contain amavis at all and so I got your "private" package via google. I tried your patches and amavisd does start now! :-) Let's look if it also scans my mails... P.S.: The server is "only" for my home network, so I am not worried about "unofficial" packages so much. P.P.S.: I upgraded the machine 7.3 -> 8.0 -> 8.1 and in the end there was a amavis-sendmail on it which also did not work. (Initially the 7.3 ran the official SuSE amavis-sendmail) P.P.P.S.: I'm also working on my diploma right now (Computer Engineering/ running a fancy "Carrera Bahn" controlled by two Linux-PCs...) ;-) -- Eat, sleep and go running, David Huecking. Well, amavis requires a commercial package (AntiVir), which we're not allowed to re-distribute. As amavis has an dependency on antivir, it's missing on the ftp-version. It's that simple :) best regards, Rainer Link (SuSE Labs) -- Rainer Link | SuSE Linux AG - The Linux Experts link@suse.de | Developer of A Mail Virus Scanner (www.amavis.org) www.suse.de | Founder OpenAntiVirus Project (www.openantivirus.org)

As Amavis can use any of a number of anti-virus (or spam) scanners, why does it need to have a dependency on antivir?

Well, then people will install AMaViS via YaST2 ([x] enable virus scanning, YaST2 mail module) and complain to our support that it won't work at all as it doesn't stop any virus. Believe me, (most) people simply do not read any documentation nor do they check any log file. And AntVir/X is currently the only virus scanner we ship and we simply can not ship all dozen virus scanners for Linux :) best regards, Rainer Link (SuSE Labs) -- Rainer Link | SuSE Linux AG - The Linux Experts link@suse.de | Developer of A Mail Virus Scanner (www.amavis.org) www.suse.de | Founder OpenAntiVirus Project (www.openantivirus.org)
