There is still the possibility that some server process is writing to a file which already has been unlinked from its directory. Have you restartet the machine? Have you - before backing up to CD - deleted some large file?
That was it! I hadn;t rebooted yet in order not to upset any forensics in case it would have been a hacker. Logging out of X and back in freed up all the missing space though, so it must have been an unlinked file. I wonder which... Before backing up I purged .xsession-errors which was about 11 Mb.: by far not enough to explain the program, but who knows... I'll keep an eye on that file. Thanks! Yuri.
