On the subject of YOU, there are plenty of people using SuSE's YOU on this list and we don't experience such problems. Look somewhere else for possible problems.
I'm using YOU and for single machine maintenance I've been quite happy with it. Switching to fou4s now that I'm going large-scale with SuSE 8.0, as 80 YOU windows is more than I want to handle. There is _one_ big problem with YOU, and that is how it crashes when it crashes. If it misses a file it won't inform you of this, it will hang. No error messages, it simply hangs. I've never had that lock up the machine, but having to kill the Yast2-processes and having no indication _what_ is missing can be annoying. And yes, files can get lost after a fsck (or a reiserfsck, in this case).
a. Not enough memory b. Bad Ram c. Bad CPU d. not enough swap space
These are quite capable of freezing a machine, and if you have a problem here (BTDTGTT) you may not see problems until you give the machine something hard to chew on. YOU, and Yast2 in general, is definitely in that cathegory.

On the subject of YOU, I had to reinstall a SuSE 7.3 last week. When I attempted to grab the YOU updates, the system crashed (no kybd response, etc.) requiring a cold boot recover. Once back to running, I tried YOU again, from the cli, and it again performed the package check then crashed the system.
I then tried YOU on another SuSE 7.3 box - and after the package check it crashed that system as well. I've given up on YOU, but the alternative app doesn't work for me either. I'd really like to get all of the security updates installed on my boxes, but it looks like I'll have to ditch everything and install a different distro instead.
Like Alex, I suggest you look elsewhere. I've seen that on overclocked machines, even when it's only a CPU overclocking. I've seen it running rtl8139-based NICs on dual-CPU systems.
