Can someone tell me if this is a SuSE package and what it is needed for? I mean, I know it's a portmapper ;-) But do I need it on SuSE 6.4 for anything? Yes, it's a SuSE package (rpm -qi portmap). Ok, good to know that it was not faked ;-)
Hehe, well, to be more specific. We do ship portmap in an extra package since 7.0.
It's needed for NFS and NIS services. Hmm, but it does not come with SuSE 6.4, and it was not in the update section for 6.4. Actually, I'm running an internal NFS server on a host without this rpm package, where /sbin/portmap is part of the nkitb-package. Yes, in 6.4 it was part of nkitb.
Could it be that the portmap.rpm is from a newer version than 6.4? Probably, yes.
