Since these are minor issues, md5sums and ftp URLs are not included. Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP server and via the YaST Online Update. - xv format string problem This update fixes a format string bug in the file name handling of xv. This is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-0665. All SUSE Linux products are affected. - opera arbitrary code execution Opera 7.54 and earlier used kfmclient exec to handle unknown MIME types, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a shortcut or launcher that contains an Exec entry. This is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2004-1491. All SUSE Linux products are affected. - Apache2 remote denial of service This update fixes a problem in the SSL handling of Apache2 which could be used by an remote attacker to crash Apache2 instances. The problem was fixed in the 2.0.50 upstream Apache2 version, this backports the fix. SUSE Linux Version 8.2 to 9.1 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 are affected by this problem. - koffice has xpdf related problems This update of koffice includes various fixes in the xpdf-based code, fixing earlier xpdf vulnerabilities. These are tracked by the Mitre CVE IDs CAN-2004-0888, CAN-2004-0889, CAN-2004-1125, and CAN-2005-0064. All SUSE Linux based products containing koffice are affected. - squirrelmail-plugins This update fixes a command injection vulnerability in squirrelmail's S/MIME Plugin which could be exploited remotely to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the web server. This issue is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-0239. All SUSE Linux Box products are affected. - clamav This clamav virus scanner was updated to version 0.83. The update fixes the following clamav problems: Due to a high number of bad files produced by broken software, the MS05-002 exploit detector now only checks specific RIFF files. This version also fixes a stability problem of clamav-milter/clamd and improves E-Mail scanning. - Mozilla Firefox IDN update correction We incorrectly wrote that Mozilla Firefox shows both puny code and IDN names. This is incorrect. We use the official Firefox upstream fix, that only shows the puny code. ______________________________________________________________________________ 2) Pending vulnerabilities in SUSE Distributions and Workarounds: - New kernel security problems New kernel security problems in regards to signedness issues have been spotted by Georgi Guninski. We are working on updates for these and other collected kernel security problems and expect a release before the easter holidays. - multiple wget problems We are still working on updated packages for the wget issues as reported on Bugtraq: http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/383998 - IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) cloaking / homograph attacks Problems with the IDN / punycode handling that allows non-ASCII domain names were reported for every browser. - The KDE approach is currently filtering on the top level domain. - The Mozilla approach is currently to display punycode. We have released Mozilla Firefox updates for this problem, the others are still pending. - PostgreSQL problems Additional PostgreSQL problems were reported: - A local user could bypass the EXECUTE permission check for functions by using the CREATE AGGREGATE command. CAN-2005-0244 - Other earlier listed problems are already fixed. We are working on updates for this problem. - New MySQL problems Problems in UserDefined function handling have been found in MySQL that could lead to remote attackers executing code in the mysql server (by using SQL insertion attacks). We are working on updates for this problem. ______________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SUSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SUSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security@suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We recommend against subscribing to security lists that cause the e-mail message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the file name of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SUSE in rpm packages for SUSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SUSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build@suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed.
