Since these are minor issues, md5sums and ftp URLs are not included. Fixed packages for the following incidents are already available on our FTP server and via the YaST Online Update. Only one problem was released without advisory this week, but please read the additional notes on the kernel problem in the pending section. - telnet Several vulnerabilities were fixed in the telnet client. A buffer overflow in the LINEMODE sub option command SLC can be exploited by a malicious server to execute arbitrary code on the client site with the privileges of the user running telnet. This is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-0469. Another buffer overflow can be exploited remotely via a malicious server by sending environment variables to the client. The result of this bug is arbitrary code execution too. This is tracked by the Mitre CVE ID CAN-2005-0468. Note that this bug can also be exploited by clicking on a URL link that uses telnet:// as protocol and points to a server controlled by an attacker. All SUSE Linux based distributions are affected by this problem. ______________________________________________________________________________ 2) Pending vulnerabilities in SUSE Distributions and Workarounds: - New kernel bluetooth security problems A security problem was found in the kernels bluetooth stack, allowing a local attacker to gain root access. This works even if bluetooth is not enabled, since the problematic modules are loaded on demand. Until we have finished our updates please use one of the following workarounds: - Remove or move away the bluetooth core module. On 2.6 kernels this is the file: /lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel/net/bluetooth/bluetooth.ko On 2.4 kernels this is the file: /lib/modules/<kernel version>/kernel/net/bluetooth/bluez.o - Disable auto load of the bluetooth protocol module by commenting out the line: alias net-pf-31 bluez in /etc/modules.conf (2.4 systems) or the line: alias net-pf-31 bluetooth in /etc/modprobe.conf (2.6 systems). Make sure the module is not loaded, or run "rmmod bluetooth" / "rmmod bluez". - multiple wget problems We are still working on updated packages for the wget issues as reported on Bugtraq: http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/383998 - IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) cloaking / homograph attacks Problems with the IDN / punycode handling that allows non-ASCII domain names were reported for every browser. - The KDE approach is currently filtering on the top level domain. - The Mozilla approach is currently to display punycode. We have released Mozilla Firefox updates for this problem, the others are still pending. - PostgreSQL problems Additional PostgreSQL problems were reported: - A local user could bypass the EXECUTE permission check for functions by using the CREATE AGGREGATE command. CAN-2005-0244 - Other earlier listed problems are already fixed. We are working on updates for this problem. ______________________________________________________________________________ 3) standard appendix: authenticity verification, additional information - Package authenticity verification: SUSE update packages are available on many mirror ftp servers all over the world. While this service is being considered valuable and important to the free and open source software community, many users wish to be sure about the origin of the package and its content before installing the package. There are two verification methods that can be used independently from each other to prove the authenticity of a downloaded file or rpm package: 1) md5sums as provided in the (cryptographically signed) announcement. 2) using the internal gpg signatures of the rpm package. 1) execute the command md5sum <name-of-the-file.rpm> after you downloaded the file from a SUSE ftp server or its mirrors. Then, compare the resulting md5sum with the one that is listed in the announcement. Since the announcement containing the checksums is cryptographically signed (usually using the key security@suse.de), the checksums show proof of the authenticity of the package. We recommend against subscribing to security lists that cause the e-mail message containing the announcement to be modified so that the signature does not match after transport through the mailing list software. Downsides: You must be able to verify the authenticity of the announcement in the first place. If RPM packages are being rebuilt and a new version of a package is published on the ftp server, all md5 sums for the files are useless. 2) rpm package signatures provide an easy way to verify the authenticity of an rpm package. Use the command rpm -v --checksig <file.rpm> to verify the signature of the package, where <file.rpm> is the file name of the rpm package that you have downloaded. Of course, package authenticity verification can only target an uninstalled rpm package file. Prerequisites: a) gpg is installed b) The package is signed using a certain key. The public part of this key must be installed by the gpg program in the directory ~/.gnupg/ under the user's home directory who performs the signature verification (usually root). You can import the key that is used by SUSE in rpm packages for SUSE Linux by saving this announcement to a file ("announcement.txt") and running the command (do "su -" to be root): gpg --batch; gpg < announcement.txt | gpg --import SUSE Linux distributions version 7.1 and thereafter install the key "build@suse.de" upon installation or upgrade, provided that the package gpg is installed.
