Re: [radeonhd] 0x791E:0x1043:0x8287: ATI Radeon 1250
Dave's post was indeed helpful. But first I must clarify something which did not appear in my original message (Saturday). I attached there a copy of the shell script which I wrote to carry out the build. This script did not appear in the archive, and as a result an important piece of information was not visible to readers. At the top of the script I had put the comment: # # REMARK: # It was necessary to remove file # /usr/include/xorg/xf86_ansic.h # in order to avoid a runtime error "undefined symbol xf86stat". # At the time I thought (on the basis of some googling) that xf86_ansic.h was an obsolete relic (awaiting de-ansification), and because its removal gave no error messages during the build and allowed the x-server to at least start I did not worry too much about discarding it. Bad move. Having seen Dave's post I did some instrumenting of routine drmOpenDevice() in file xf86drm.c myself. I always got zero for the structure members st.st_dev and st.st_rdev and inconsistent values for dev. I conclude that there is something seriously wrong with the definition of dev_t in my build. I haven't tried to find where the definition is located; all I really know is that sizeof(dev_t) is 8. Although it seems that removal of xf86_ansic.h wrecks the build, I have just as much trouble if I retain xf86_ansic.h. In the latter case the build again gives no error messages, but at runtime I get a black screen when starting X and messages in Xorg.0.log about not finding any fonts. This is my first build using git and I guess I am trying to do too much at once. There was a bug in git about xf86_ansic.h, but that should have been
fixed in the meantime. You can also remove xf86_ansic.h, but you have to
configure again after that. It might also be that you'd rather have to
specify that during configuring and building of the Xserver, but I'm not
100% sure about that.

I could imagine that your xf86_ansic.h is a left-over from an old installation (where this was still installed by default). Check the dates of the files. Maybe you find some additional ones that shouldn't be here.
Having seen Dave's post I did some instrumenting of routine drmOpenDevice() in file xf86drm.c myself. /usr/include/xorg/xf86_libc.h:typedef unsigned long xf86dev_t; /usr/include/bits/typesizes.h:#define __DEV_T_TYPE __UQUAD_TYPE /usr/include/bits/types.h:# define __UQUAD_TYPE __u_quad_t (32) # define __UQUAD_TYPE unsigned long (64) Looks similar. 8 bytes is normal, verified here. When you printed the structure elements, did you cast to int, or did you use %lld (32bit) or %ld (64bit)? %d isn't enough with uncast dev_t.

Maybe you should try building + installing everything with a different
--prefix (/usr/local or /opt/xorg_git or something like that). The wiki
page describes what you need to do, though not really in detail.

Some progress but no success yet.

I have done a completely fresh build after removing the stale headers related to X in /usr/include. I used the prefix /opt/xorg_git and downloaded the minimum needed to meet dependencies. The build completed without error messages. From the character-based console in Ubuntu's "recovery mode" I set "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/xorg_git/lib" and then ran "startx -- /opt/xorg_git/bin/Xorg". I got a sensible display (xterm under fvwm as specified in .xinitrc) but this display would not accept any input from keyboard or mouse. I could, however, drop back to the character-based console with Ctrl-F1 as usual. The file /opt/xorg_git/var/log/Xorg.0.log showed no errors. In particular, my weekend problem with opening /dev/dri/card0 seems to have gone away. I attach for your information: (1) The shell script I used to carry out the latest build. (2) Xorg.0.log (3) xorg.conf I'm a novice at this X business and appreciate all comments and advice. well, perhaps evdev/hal is interfering again, try uninstalling that and try again, perhaps that would help Matthias Hopf schrieb:

master is tracking 1.6 (1.5.99.x) development, the server-1.5-branch is tracking 1.4.99.x development. Should we be pulling from that, instead?

That's what it says in the message on mine too, though I am guessing that the "release date" is only updated for the formal releases.

This still holds. This is strange.

Upstream must be kidding. 1.5 isn't even out, and now there's 1.5.99 tracked?!?
Should we be pulling from that, instead?
Shouldn't matter, actually.

Please try that. Even though I don't understand why keyboard + mouse
drivers aren't autoloaded.

Some progress but no success yet.
Maybe you should try building + installing everything with a different --prefix (/usr/local or /opt/xorg_git or something like that). The wiki page describes what you need to do, though not really in detail.
I currently am doing something a little more insane, but it happens to work. The advantage is header and shared objects are not shared with any other part of the system, this cuts down on problems caused by these. Using rbind and bind mounts I'm able to run a gnome session cross chroots... gnome-panel plugins loaded from different chroots and the XC server running in even another chroot. To make things easy/ I'm using schroot, so my xserverrc and xsessionrc files can enter the chroots. Here is my fstab (using Debian syntax for it's mount command. Knowen not to work in rhel4.) /proc /ppc32/proc none rbind 0 0 /dev /ppc32/dev none rbind 0 0 /sys /ppc32/sys none rbind 0 0 /tmp /ppc32/tmp none rbind 0 0 /home /ppc32/home none rbind 0 0 /media /ppc32/media none rbind 0 0 /lib/modules /ppc32/lib/modules none rbind 0 0 /var/run/dbus /ppc32/var/run/dbus none rbind 0 0 /var/run/cups /ppc32/var/run/cups none rbind 0 0 /var/db/nscd /ppc32/var/db/nscd none rbind 0 0 /var/run/nscd /ppc32/var/run/nscd none rbind 0 0 # With this I'm able to load 32bit panel plugins into a 64bit # gnome-panel. My X server runs out of /lenny/. /proc /lenny/proc none rbind 0 0 /dev /lenny/dev none rbind 0 0 /sys /lenny/sys none rbind 0 0 /tmp /lenny/tmp none rbind 0 0 /home /lenny/home none rbind 0 0 /media /lenny/media none rbind 0 0 /lib/modules /lenny/lib/modules none rbind 0 0 /var/run/dbus /lenny/var/run/dbus none rbind 0 0 /var/run/cups /lenny/var/run/cups none rbind 0 0 /var/db/nscd /lenny/var/db/nscd none rbind 0 0 /var/run/nscd /lenny/var/run/nscd none rbind 0 0 It would be awsome to have a server chroot and client chroot, for testing. Also bootable CDs, like knoppix would be nice. I'm not sure what would go-into the chroots... would it make sence to have the build environment and a script that grabs git, or just have the binarys? I think using chroots like this will make distributing and testing software esier... for non-development systems there is an advantage to using shared objects, but not for testing IMHO. Perhasps the answer is to build a static Xserver instead? Still with that approch you will want a controled chroot for your build process... So there may be little extra bennifit.
I attach for your information:
(1) The shell script I used to carry out the latest build. (2) Xorg.0.log (3) xorg.conf
I'm a novice at this X business and appreciate all comments and advice.

Did I miss something there? master is at 1.4.99 something.
Release Date: 5 September 2007
This doesn't look a recent Xserver. Did you get the right sources? Maybe a wrong branch?

Should we be pulling from that, instead?
I tried to repeat the build with an older version of xserver by adding the single line git-checkout -b server-1.4-branch to my shell script immediately after the line "cd $SRC/xserver". But it seems this did not achieve what I intended (bad syntax?), because when I ran the new Xorg executable I got the same line X.Org X Server 1.5.99.1 near the top of file /opt/xorg_git/var/log/Xorg.0.log. The behaviour was the same as before: I got a display but it was unresponsive to keyboard and mouse. I should add that in order to ensure a clean, fresh build, I deleted the source directory /var/tmp/radeonhd_dri and the output directory /opt/xorg_git before running my script. Matthias Hopf wrote:

InputDevice "Generic Keyboard" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Configured Mouse" "CorePointer"
here for older Xservers that don't autoload these.
Before attempting to build with the older xserver I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf to include the option "CoreKeyboard" for InputDevice "Generic Keyboard". (The option "CorePointer" for InputDevice "Configured Mouse" was already present.) This edit had no effect: the display still did not accept input from keyboard or mouse. I have some small success to report. I had been using cd $SRC/drm ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr make make install cd linux-core make DRM_MODULES="radeon" make install depmod -a to install the drm module. On my Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 system that ends up putting drm.ko and radeon.ko in /lib/modules/2.6.24-17-generic/extra Those are never seen and I kept loading old modules from elsewhere. When I actually followed the directions in drm/README and copied the *.ko files to /lib/modules/2.6.24-17-generic/kernel/drivers/char/drm Then they were properly loaded and I get this in Xorg.0.log (code still has my extra instrumentation): drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:01:05.0 drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenDevice: major device number is 226 drmOpenDevice: remove (/dev/dri/card0) result is -1, (No such file or directory) drmOpenDevice: mknod (/dev/dri/card0) result is 0, (OK) drmOpenDevice: chown (/dev/dri/card0) result is 0, (OK) drmOpenDevice: chmod (/dev/dri/card0) result is 0, (OK) drmOpenDevice: stat (/dev/dri/card0) result is 0, (OK) drmOpenDevice: open result is 7, (OK) drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 7 drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci:0000:01:05.0 (II) RADEONHD(0): Found libdrm 1.3.0. (II) RADEONHD(0): Found radeon drm 1.29.0. I see that drm/linux-core/Makefile is invoking a Makefile from the installed kernel itself to build and install the modules. At least on Ubuntu there seems to be some skew between the assumptions in drm/linux-core and the Makefile in the kernel tree. I tried to repeat the build with an older version of xserver by adding the single line
git-checkout -b server-1.4-branch
this should read git-checkout -b server-1.4-branch --track origin/server-1.4-branch (remember you already created your own branch, so you probably need to 'git-checkout master; git-branch -d server-1.4-branch' first). Alternatively, you can checkout the branch in a non-tracking read-only way: git-checkout origin/server-1.4-branch
to my shell script immediately after the line "cd $SRC/xserver". But it seems this did not achieve what I intended (bad syntax?), because when I ran the new Xorg executable I got the same line
X.Org X Server 1.5.99.1
Because you created a new branch at the previously checked out version.

That's what the depmod -a is actually for. If this didn't work, I'd like
to have an explanation of someone more involved with kernel development,
because the priorities of the module directories isn't really clear to
me. It worked for me, so I thought it's fine...
Thanks
