Do I need to have 2.6.30* to use regular Xv with radeonhd?
Xv and EXA for r6xx/r7xx requires the latest radeon kernel module. Vanilla 2.6.29 doesn't include this, but you can compile it yourself: http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonhd%3Ar6xx_r7xx_branch
And also, is there a way to get xorg-server-1.6 on openSUSE without compiling it by hand? I don't mind compiling a driver here and there or the kernel (which I seem to do pretty often), but I remember X being a fairly unwieldy beast to compile. Any suggestions?

I really suggest using "Reply to all" :) You can use http://software.opensuse.org/search to search for xorg-x11-server. I'm sure that current factory repository contains 1.6 now: http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/suse/ -- Rafał Miłecki -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org
I'll try the factory repository. Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: radeonhd+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: radeonhd+help@opensuse.org

We have the bleeding edge X stuff in the X11:XOrg repository on build
service:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/
For 11.0, 11.1, and for factory (should be approximately the same ATM).
Note that the dependencies are a bit... suboptimal still. I.e. you
absolutely need the drivers if you're updating the server. Also
libpixman and libpciaccess.

Well I got radeonhd 1.2.5 working with the stock xorg 1.5.2 that comes with openSUSE 11.1. Turns out all I had to do was not try to install the Catalyst driver, which messes with a number of xorg.conf entries to the point that neither 1.2.4 nor 1.2.5 radeonhd versions work. I just added the two lines from Yang Zhao's skeletal xorg.conf that enable DRI and EXA, and suddenly it works as well as it does in Windows (better IMO, since it isn't Windows). Thank you to everyone who helped with this. Now I'll have proper functionality while I wait for the PCIe RAID card to arrive so I can use the NVidia GTX295 that covers all my onboard SATA ports. Any motherboard that makes me store my $500+ video card on the shelf in an anti-static bag instead of in an x16 PCIe slot needs to be redesigned...
