I have an ASUS EAH3450 (0x95C5:0x1043:0x01F4, Newegg N82E16814121259), which is a: 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3450 [1002:95c5] 02:00.1 Audio device [0403]: ATI Technologies Inc RV620 Audio device [Radeon HD 34xx Series] [1002:aa28] I have a 1280x1024 DVI LCD connected to the DVI output, and a 1024x768 VGA LCD connected to the VGA output. This board was working decently well with the "radeon" driver (Debian package version 1:6.9.0-1+lenny4). However, I have problems with the DVI screen flickering off and on occasionally (sometimes once a day, sometimes once a minute), so I figured I'd give "radeonhd" a try. To make both screens work, I ended up needing the following configuration: Section "Device" Identifier "video" Driver "radeonhd" Option "HPD" "Off" Option "UseAtomBIOS" "On" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "DVI-I_2/digital" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "VGA_1" Option "RightOf" "DVI-I_2/digital" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" SubSection "Display" Virtual 2560 1024 EndSubSection EndSection - Without any device options, no connected monitors are detected and X doesn't start. - With only HPD Off, the DVI monitor is detected, but the VGA is not. - With only UseAtomBIOS On, the VGA monitor is detected, but DVI is not. - With both, both monitors work. I still have the flickering problem. Sometimes, using xrandr to toggle the refresh rate between "60.0" and "59.9" makes it less frequent, which makes me suspect a driver issue, but it could be the monitor too, I don't really know. One final problem is that when I start X, the mouse cursor doesn't display until I also load a client like xterm and move the mouse in and out of the window. There's just a black blank screen, which led me to think the driver wasn't working at all for a long time. A minor but confusing problem! xorg.conf contains: Section "Device" Identifier "video" Driver "radeonhd" EndSection "X -logverbose 7" output is attached as radeonhd.log For conntest, I ran "rhd_conntest 02:00.0 -s -x 256" for each case: conntest-none.log: no monitors connected conntest-dvi.log: only DVI connected conntest-vga.log: only VGA connected conntest-both.log: both connected While shuffling cables, I remembered that I have a KVM switch on the VGA (duh), so I also did: conntest-vganokvm.log: only VGA connected, no KVM conntest-bothnokvm.log: both connected, no KVM In this case the VGA output is now detected properly, and an Xorg.conf containing just: Section "Device" Identifier "video" Driver "radeonhd" Option "HPD" "Off" EndSection now drives both monitors. It flickers both with or without AtomBIOS. Sometimes the screen jitters to the right for a split second too. I tried a poweroff and cold boot but it doesn't change. The vesa driver doesn't flicker. If it would help to check DVI voltages or timings on a scope, I can do that, but it will take me a few days. -jim

Thanks, your card hasn't wired up HPD, indeed. I have pushed a quirks table entry for this card.

Is there an option to override detection on VGA?
You can create a monitor section for the output, and add Option "Enable" in this monitor section. But you will have to specify the monitor by hand (HorzSync/VertRefresh/MaxClock). Eventually we will have to rethink the detection logic. Given the amount of grieve this has already caused us I doubt that there is a generic enough solution, though.

I did some more testing with the plain radeon driver. The flickering is basically the same -- until I enabled DefaultTMDSPLL, which seems to have fixed it. That's interesting, maybe you found a general PLL programming bug.
