radeonhd is intended for chips >= R500
This starts with X1300 and later.
For r300 cards you have to use the xf86-video-ati (aka radeon) driver not the radeonhd.
I know :) I have a r5xx based FireGL V5200, but the driver seems to use the r3xx 3d code. So, it seems to work with either radeon and radeonhd. Should I however stick with radeon, or try to make radeonhd work?

According to this post:

and

it's supposed to work.
I upgraded to ubuntu intrepid with X.Org X Server 1.5.2 with linux 2.6.27.7 and it fails to launch with the config below SEGVs after failing to open /dev/dri/card0
(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so: undefined symbol: _glapi_tls_Context) (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
Ok, that problem was due to leftover fglrx packages that had taken over my /usr/lib/libGL.so. Doh...
After that, radeonhd does init and run one 3d app before locking up the machine. Using radeon instead works, but is pretty slow for 3d: 1613fps glxgears, 14fps lavalite, and google earth takes 5mn to zoom on a spot.
Is that expected?
