The only regression from VESA so far is that mplayer doens't want to play full-screen, as there is no Xv extension (VESA could be tricked by using SDL as video-output).
I doubt VESA actually supports Xv. Therefore, I believe mplayer should work with the X11 output plug-in just like I guess it did with VESA. You can force it by appending the line "vo=x11" to your $HOME/.mplayer/config file.
You're right that VESA doesn't support Xv, but mplayer could play fullscreen with vo=sdl. Unfortenately sdl crashes with radeonhd :
X11 error: XF86DGANoDirectVideoMode
x11 and sdl _do_ work when the video is unscaled. gl and gl2 work fullscreen, but are way to slow to be useful (-framedrop helps but only about 20% of the frames are shown).
At least here (X1400 in 1400x1050), the video output I obtain is very similar from what I get in VESA.
I guess I don't :(
I'll wait for improvements to the driver...
Not needed for mplayer :) While real fullscreen doesn't work with sdl, almost-fullscreen works fine with sdl if I make the mplayer window fullscreen. On a dualcore Prescott @ 1.83 GHz it takes some 40-50% of one core to play a DVD this way. The only disadvantage is that the window bar is visible at the top of the screen, but this bar is small enough to be ignored.
