I would assume that your drm module is too old. Check /var/log/messages.

Thanks for your reply. about /var/log/message : "Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810" so I guess you're right. About the windows lagging, I tried with XAA (not supported) and then realized that firmware-linux package was not pulled. Since I corrected that, 2D (at least) works (apparently) flulessly (and the [dri] error message disappeared from Xorg.0.log) If you're interested in more information about this (maybe rare) chipset just give me some tests/configs to run.
