System-Crash with radeonhd or ATI-gflrx-driver and Sapphire RADEON HD 3870
Hallo guys, i'm always new in the world of Suse and Linux, but i'm willing to learn and getting more and more to know the good sides on OSS. I bought a new Computer 2 weeks ago and tried to get everything fixed an running, but i'm still stuck with one main problem: First some details on my system, if they may be important? MB: Asus P5K Premium RAM: 8GB CPU: Intel Quadcore Q9450 GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 Dual DVI with 512MB Passivcooled BS: (Windows Vista x64, Windows XP x64) and OpenSUSE 10.3 64 Monitor: Acer PW243 24" & Samsung 17" So, when installing the system, Suse installs a rudimental VESA driver and that is working quite well, but only with 1 Monitor and on a max resolution of 1200x1024. Also my old TV-card (WinTV PCI - BT878) does not work with that VESA driver. So i need to get any ATI driver working, but everything i tried failed at last. As a newby i tried the 1-Click install for ATI Cards from the Suse-ATI Page, but after running "SaX2 -r" or "SaX2 -r -m 0=fglrx" my system crashes down when "startx" is called automatically. It results in a black screen and the whole computer doesn't response anymore. The same happend with 8.41, 8.47 and 8.49 Version. I also tried the new radeonhd opensource driver with the same results - a full system crash. Refering to the Manual the HD 3870 should be supported and i think i'm doing everything right. Has anyone noticed a similar problem or knows any workaround for the HD 3870? A friend of mine, very familiar with opensuse tried the same and said, that the driver might cause the kernel to crash. The files (logs & hardware infos) are already sent to suse, but i thought it could be helpful to ask here on the list as well. So, any ideas or advise for help are very welcome. Did you verify that the fglrx kernel module isn't loaded? This is a
typical source of system crashes.
Make sure that 'rpm -qa | grep fglrx' doesn't show anything, and
uninstall if it is. Unfortunately, the kernel module is probably still
loaded, and unloading isn't exactly enough, you probably have to reboot
after removing the rpms.

Hi,
I also tried the new radeonhd opensource driver with the same results - a full system crash.

I deinstalled the fglrx but it is still loaded i think. "rpm -qa | grep fglrx" show nothing, but "lsmod | grep fglrx" gives me "fglrx 1955072 0" and although i removed that with "rmmod fglrx" it is still there after every reboot :-( Concerning the radeonhd driver i downloaded the source and recompiled it, cause my friend (a collegue of yours: JD) told me, that perhaps i need to do that, because of a kernal update or something like that!? So, i got the sources and compiled a new radeonhd_drv.so, but that gives me the following errors after restart: (EE) module ABI major version (2) dorsn't match the server's version (1) (EE) Failed to load module "radeonhd" (module requirement mismatch, 0) (EE) No drivers available. In another forum i found the workaround to place the following line to xorg.conf: -> Option "IgnoreABI" "on" With that line, the Gui starts, but switching to a console i only find a cryptografic screen and that doesn't seem to be as a wished result. Also the GUI only works with the "normal" resolution of 1200x1024 and not my max. choosen one with 1920x1200 :-( Perhaps you can provide me any more tipps on getting the radeonhd to work without any workarounds and to work properly? Would be very thankful as i tried that now for about 3 days and nothing worked, but as i said, i'm a newby on Linux. So i guess everything takes more time for me :-) Regards, Marcus -- Ist Ihr Browser Vista-kompatibel? In that case you probably have installed the fglrx driver not by commmunity repositories, but by hand. Do a find /lib/modules -name fglrx.\* and delete the found modules (you may add '-exec rm \{\} +' to the find command for that).

Don't do that. This is typically a bad idea. If an ABI mismatch happens
for a self-compiled version of the driver, then your Xserver SDK doesn't
match the installed Xserver (package xorg-x11-server-sdk vs. xorg-x11-server).
