I figured out the options for a large virtual desktop, and thankfully, no black-magic here. Things work as mentioned in http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonhd It was the myriad outputs that had me confused previously: DVI-I_1/digital, DVI-I_1/analog, DVI-I_2/digital, DVI-I_2/analog plus TV_7PIN_DIN Why are there 4 outputs anyway?
It's actually 5 ;) And it's 5 because you have 5 outputs. You obviously only have three connectors, but DVI-I is capable of digital (TMDS) and analog (VGA) output. You can only use two simultaneously, and you can (practically) only use one of the two of a DVI-I at a time, but that's a different story.
Another question: I know that there's there's no hardware (direct) rendering, but shouldn't OpenGL programs still work using software rendering? well, glxgears doesn't work for me: $glxgears Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
You're probably missing the "glx" module in your xorg.conf (which wasn't part of the forwarded mail from John).
