[opensuse-project] Announcing search.opensuse.org
Hello- I have put together a simple search interface to opensuse.org that uses Google CSE by default but allows for submissions to application specific webforms. You can find it here: http://search.opensuse.org/ Found a bug? Want to contribute? Fork it on gitorious.org: http://gitorious.org/search-opensuse-org/search-opensuse-org I would like to thank Marcus Rückert and Pascal Bleser for their help. Have Fun, Brandon -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

What is that search feature even meant to do? You have the build service search on the left which seems to work fine. (I tried a search for fping) But searching via the "packages" search for fping returns nothing. It is part of the standard repos as well as having a devel repo, so I'm not sure what's going on there. Or what the intended functionality is. Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I guess it gives/gave often better results than the thing on software.opensuse.org Compare: openFATE #310986 Software Search to arrive at most desirable options https://features.opensuse.org/310986 And I think the users could benefit from an improvement in both search engines. Especially in the case of Tumbleweed. Example for the default search engine of the build service: http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=zypper&baseproject=openSUSE%3ATumbleweed a search for zypper gives no hits for Tumbleweed . Maybe a search for a package in Tumbleweed could include the actual stable release (now 11.4) - just with an lower/ posterior priority (so that any packages that are already in Tumbleweed would appear first?). The other (not rolling) Releases 11.x may profit of if the packages in the Update Repositories would appear before the orignal release packages and those before the other packages. Sure, that's because there are no pages that include both of them, right?

2.1 In cases like 1.2 the result should be... 2.1.1 ...for Tumbleweed first: the actual stable/default version/packages of zypper/<package> in Tumbleweed. following: the other versions/packages that may fit. 2.1.2 ...for the not-rolling releases (e. g.: openSUSE 11.4): first: the actual stable version of zypper/<package> in Updates. second: the default version of zypper/<package> in oss/non-oss like it was in the released version/Goldmaster. following: other versions (probably stabler versions/packages from trustworthier repostiories before other) without any Tumbleweed packages (because this ended and most probably will continue to end in users with mixed repository list and messed up systems) 3. And I wonder how that search setting [openSUSE Tumbleweed] will correspond with the setting in the openSUSE Build Service (OBS) if some choose [openSUSE Tumbleweed] as an target to build against. Will the packages that not appear in the search for packages for/in Thumbleweed also not be regarded in the OBS to build against Thumbleweed? Or is there a different setting that includes the 11.4 packages that are not jet newer in Thumbleweed? Running our own indexer and search frontend is a ton of work. Pascal and I had a side discussion before I stared work on this about using Solr but all of the various applications will need to be taught how to feed their data to Solr first. Probably a good month of engineering effort to get everything working. At my University we used Nutch and the results were pretty bad and a lot of hand holding needed to happen for URLs that were suboptimal and broke rules. If people find search.opensuse.org useful and want to replace it with something comparable I say go for it. However, a domain wide analytics solution is more urgently needed. At this point there is no easy way to see how many people are actually using search.opensuse.org. It would be really dissapointing to get our own search engine running and then find it gets 2 hits a day. Great, glad to see that is coming along. What tool is it built on? I am eager to give it a spin on search.opensuse.org when it is ready.
