[opensuse-project] Ideas from openFATE for GSOC that are looking for mentors
Hi all, We have copied some ideas we found interesting on openFATE to the openSUSE GSOC 2011 ideas page and we are looking for people to mentor for those. Take a look at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC_2011_Ideas and if you are able to mentor something add your name for it. Remember, if you'd like some fresh blood in your project or have some task to be done for which you don't have time, GSOC is a great opportunity! Our deadline is next Monday already so hurry! Wouldn't it be better to keep the ideas in FATE, and create a SoC product there, so we don't have to copy things around? -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Maybe initially, but in the end: "... FATE is not a bug tracker. If we have a specific SoC product there, we can create a nice list of ideas, which are specifically targeted at SoC with all bells and whistles, and we have a decent way to track and reference them. -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
But some ideas are already there by now, so moving it is realy a bad idea imo. But we dont have a tagging feature at FATE, which would have been awesome, otherwise we could just have tagged it to GSOC Regards Manu On Wed, 2011-02-23 at 11:08 +0100, Cornelius Schumacher wrote:

We do ;-) Just have a look at the right column when viewing a feature. Greetings

Ok, so if you guys insist, I'll copy the stuff over from FATE, which I think would make sense as SoC projects.
But we dont have a tagging feature at FATE, which would have been awesome, otherwise we could just have tagged it to GSOC
We could create a SoC product, which we could assign SoC features to. This even would allow tracking integration into openSUSE releases where it applies. -- Cornelius Schumacher <cschum@suse.de> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

The thought behind the action of proposing things from openFATE is that we could maybe find mentors easier, because if someone likes an idea enough to start working on it could easily mentor some students so that the work will be done sooner and without so many effort from one person only. Or tag whatever you think is as GSOC and then we will export it as text and add to the wiki. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

For a start I have tagged the ideas already listed on the wiki page "openSUSE:GSOC 2011 Ideas" on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC_2011_Ideas with GSOC_2011 and added a link to the according overview/automatic list https://features.opensuse.org/query/tag?tag=gsoc_2011 to the wiki page: http://en.opensuse.org/index.php?title=openSUSE%3AGSOC_2011_Ideas&action=historysubmit&diff=35177&oldid=35176 Regards Martin -- - Martin Seidler - openSUSE profile: https://users.opensuse.org/show/pistazienfresser -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
Hope I am allowed to 'conquer' the thread a bit for a theme very connected (or is this still the same theme?): 1. Example: Is this the same or connected ? openFATE #308357 Replacement for Sax2 https://features.opensuse.org/308357 and wiki article: GSOC 2011 Ideas ; section: SaX 3 http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC_2011_Ideas#SaX_3 2. In general: How should issues so alike be connected on the GSOC_2012_ideas wiki article and on openFATE? - link on the individual proposal section of the wiki article ? - tag the openFATE thread with GSOC_2011 ? - both? -...? Regards Martin By the way: Why are the wiki articles named GSOC_*2011*//GSOC_2012_ideas not GSOC, GSoC , Google_Summer_of_Code //~_ideas ? Is the summer 2011 not past? -- - Martin Seidler - openSUSE profile: https://users.opensuse.org/show/pistazienfresser -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I would say tag them with GSoC 2011 and then at the end while preparing applications collect them to give a shape at the end it is just my opinion though

Because these are ideas for GSOC 2011 and thats what came into my mind, however maybe we can keep a general category saying gsoc, and then for the coming years GSoC2012 and so on..

Done this as I rated your suggestion making much sense. ;-)

Ah. I have already categorized both articles with [[Category:Google Summer of Code]] -> http://en.opensuse.org/Category:Google_Summer_of_Code. Maybe a split of the ideas article would make sense to make clear what was past and what may be future -> in my view this would not say that an intersection of features that had not been realized in the past could not be planned for the future, too.
