Evergreen, where has the Long Term Support gone...
Good morning, So, question. We use to have Evergreen which was going to be our LTS version, so that when a distro reached the magical .3 in the release, we could switch to Evergreen. I haven't seen anything on it in while, has Evergreen stopped? Do we not have any LTS version? I am switching a lot of systems from openSUSE 42.3 to 15.3, and I am saddened by the number of software packages that seem to have been removed. One of the reasons I started using SuSE back in the day was, it had the most packages, which was awesome. Here is an example, Nginx has a log of module packages that are no longer there. Oh, please don't tell me to go too software.opensuse.org, is great only if people keep their software up-to-date. I don't know how many packages I have found only to get that it going to do break major things. Even Tumbleweed seems to be losing packages. Hi Packages are there, just from a different location for a lot...SLE backports. AFAIK it's a know issue with the Leap repository changes. I'm curious - I see no nginx modules in 42.3. Both 42.3 and 15.3 have just nginx. Greetings, Stephan

Yes, Evergreen has stopped quite a while ago because we have an LTS version which is Leap which fully covers my needs in contrast to the openSUSE releases in the past. Yes, there are minor/patch/service releases which need to be performed but that is acceptable for me. Wolfgang

alas that's not true, at least not right now. I expect it to be true in near future. going from 15.1 to 15.2broke my config in an unrecoverable way. going to 15.3 will obviously give problem, due to the SLE merging. But it's not a bad move :-(. I have a 15.3 server that I expect to run a very longtime without major change : very simple setup, quiter certainly very SLE compatible but I have to keep my 15.1 kde/plasma as long as my present computer works... Linux is moving (too) fast, sometime :-( jdd -- http://dodin.org

This would have almost certainly been worthy of a bug report in most packages

Hopefully those problems with repo structure are now resolved, as for the content it is still basically the same its just the place its built has changed from openSUSE to SUSE, previously we were using the SUSE sources to build our binaries now we just take the SUSE binaries directly. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

it's very tricky, I had a thread here on the subject, but I stopped in some words, I need to display in full hd (1080p) on a hd (720p) screen. This worked in kde for 15.1 (on two different computers) and the aspect of the display is perfect (I use it since two years now). This worked with xfce but not kde in 15.2 and don't work in kde 15.3 (not yet tested xfce) I use xrandr to get this, but looks like I'm the only one that need it... thanks jdd -- http://dodin.org

Is this actually readable? I think I would go mad trying to read something that is not sharp. Also isn’t 1080p kind of the minimum for new screens anyway. I have not had anything less than 1080p for almost a decade and I never buy new hardware.

yes, exactly as good as native full hd on same size screen (15.6")

yes, but not on my second hand 6 years old asus laptop, but with i7 and 16Gb ram / 1Tb ssd, I would have to spent much to replace it :-( kde allows to make content with bigger size, but not smaller. I only discovered by chance that on Intel video I can have VIRTUAL screen and adjust display with this screen jdd -- http://dodin.org

Very interesting what you're saying. During the release party I live updated 3x 15.2 servers to 15.3 with no issues one of which started it's life with Leap 42 and survived every update (it is running unsupported solutions). We even downloaded 42 and direct updated to 15.3 (nothing configured, just installed with XFCE and went for dup to 15.3) also had no issues. Anyhow if something breaks you can roll back or you can ask for help on Matrix, Discord, Telegram, ML and I'm sure the community is happy to help speaking from experience :)

server is prone to use only basic software and probably the better tested from SLES, so I won't expect any problem there :-) desktop with kde is an other story anyway, making such leap is not very LTS like. That said, it's not to be redone in next years (how could it?) jdd -- http://dodin.org

In theory at least, Leap is an LTS of shorts, so Evergreen did indeed stop. There is a major version: 42, or 15, and then minor versions: .1, .2,... In theory at least, the jump from 15.1 to 15.2 should be minor and uneventful, easy upgrades. (previously, versions like 14.1 and 14.2 were all major versions despite the numbering) This is mostly true for the core packages inherited from the SLES of the same number. Kernel, libraries, gnome... but not for community packages that SLES doesn't have, like KDE.
I am switching a lot of systems from openSUSE 42.3 to 15.3, and I am saddened by the number of software packages that seem to have been removed. One of the reasons I started using SuSE back in the day was, it had the most packages, which was awesome.

There is a problem with 15.3 that search doesn't seem to be working properly. You will have to ask about specific packages that you miss. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from oS Leap 15.2 x86_64 (Minas Tirith))
