The publicly-traded Micro Focus company has bought out the privately-owned Attachmate, which bought out Novell back in 2010 that owned SUSE at the time. Micro Focus is a British supplier of computer software and consulting services to large corporations, largely around upgrading from legacy platforms and mainframes. Micro Focus is buying Attachmate through a reverse-takeover for a $1.2 billion dollar deal and the combined capital and debt of the new firm is valued at $2.35 billion USD. According to an e-mail sent out to SUSE customers form Nils Brauckmann, yes.
How does this affect us?
The announcement is about 12 hours old, I don't think anyone could even be expected to know the answer to that question. From Nils' e-mail, it's "business as usual" for SUSE (as it should be in such a circumstance). Given that there are shareholders involved on the Micro Focus side (they're a public company traded on the London Stock Exchange), it's hard to even say that it's a done deal at this point. If anything's going to change, it'll only be after the deal closes in November. Legally, companies undergoing M&A talks *can't* do a lot until the deal is completed.
