[opensuse-project] FYI: I intent to run for the next openSUSE Board
Hey Peepz, just to let you and the election officials know I want to run for the openSUSE Board again. Since the conference after the last we started to transform the Board from a group of people who had no real idea what they are supposed to do (only what they are not supposed to do) into an entity of democratic elected representatives of our Members that tries to tackle the important project wide challenges. We took a stand for the independence of this project with the first steps towards a Foundation, we pushed to clarify the direction we are heading to with getting the Strategy rolling and we took care of the growth of the openSUSE projects by accelerating the Membership process. I'm proud of what we achieved but I also think that we are far from done. I'm especially concerned about the topic of the Foundation because I don't see too many people invested yet. We need to make sure that the Foundation is set up so that all the people who are willing AND able to carry it into the future are engaged from the beginning and understand that the openSUSE Foundation is theirs to run and to enjoy. Other than that I want to make sure that we continue the path we are on and act as a council of democratic elected representatives that don't dictate but facilitate because I think this is one of the greatest achievements of the openSUSE Project. Leadership without powerplay. And of course, you know me, I also want to continue to make sure that the openSUSE Board work produces tangible results :) So please accept my candidacy and vote for me and I promise I will continue to push this project forward. So, stupid question of the day: how can I invest myself more in setting up the Foundation? I want that to happen, I'm ready to help, I want to invest my energy to make that happen. But I'm not on the board and for some reason, I always miss the IRC meetings where this is discussed, and I see no mail about this. So I'm not sure how I can help since I don't know what is the current status, and where help is needed. I expect other people are in the same situation :/ (FWIW, I very strongly believe that the board doesn't have to do everything itself, but I know it's not as easy as it sounds.) Not a stupid question at all. This is something the board addressed at the last meeting with a goal of making the process more open and transparent. Alan Clark, our new chair, is going to work on putting all our relevant information up on the wiki. And we have created a opensuse-foundation@opensuse.org mailing list. We're going to make sure everyone who wants to join in and considers themselves a stakeholder have the access to do so. Wohooo! :) I was hoping for you to step up.
But I'm not on the board and for some reason, I always miss the IRC meetings where this is discussed, and I see no mail about this.
You always find automatic minutes on the board meeting page http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Board_meeting and Bryen also started to write minutes for the last couple of meetings on news.o.o
So I'm not sure how I can help since I don't know what is the current status, and where help is needed.
We need to work out bylaws that regulate things like the purpose, the membership handling and the governance of the foundation. We then need to organize an inauguration meeting and afterward we need to fill the positions that we create with life which is most important. So you can participate in the planing, implementing and running of the Foundation. And I think that everyone that is serious about this needs to do all 3 things o make this a success. So as a first step I would encourage you to participate in our board meetings where we currently discuss the bylaws of the Foundation. They are public on IRC. The next one is at January the 12th, 19:00 UTC in #opensuse-project.
I expect other people are in the same situation :/
Me too. Thats why we decided in the last board meeting that we want to open up this process of creating the foundation to everybody interested. We will mingle on a separate public mailinglist (opensuse-foundation) and document results of our discussions on a wiki page.
(FWIW, I very strongly believe that the board doesn't have to do everything itself, but I know it's not as easy as it sounds.)
I think we have learned that since the governance discussion at the conference before last (where you also violently advocated for outsourcing tasks ;) and you can see that already in two of the 3 initiatives I mentioned where we appointed a strategy team and the membership officials. So don't worry your point is near and dear to our heart! Hope to see you in the board meeting in January Vincent! Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, openSUSE. The next one is at January the 12th, 19:00 UTC in #opensuse-project. This is a good thing to do. I did the last time when the discussion came to the Foundation thing in the board meeting. I had the impression that we are still far far away from a common understanding what the foundation is for, how the community and the founder of the project which is Novell can benefit from it, and yes, why we want it at all.
There is still a huge amount of work to do, most of it is talking, clearifying and convincing to prepare everything that decisions can be met which are good for all. For that, we urgently need experienced people like you, Vincent :-) regards, Klaas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
