[opensuse-project] Reviving the marketing team
![](https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar/987f55446f0e8d0b5873a7ecfa26b9a1.jpg?s=120&d=mm&r=g)
Hi all! Watching openSUSE from being not involved in development I get the impression that it keeps acting like a poker player: Having a full deck of cards at hand including four aces but not showing to anyone just because the position of his sun glasses could… possibly… eventually… under circumstances… be optimized. That's something I want to change and want to revive the marketing team and get arts people involved. So I started to take notes: 1) Create content - present tools - continuous reports about developments going on - do interviews with different people/teams about their work in oS - ask people running booths to report - show how cool oS features are - draw pictures, memes and such - create video demos of various oS features 2) Create buzz - push stuff from 1) to any platform online - push shop-o-o with monthly product - make raffles of stickers etc. - invite to chats, forums etc. to discuss things 3) Keep following up - run regular onboarding events for new people interested to help - tailor events for special interests ("how to work with oS as a web dev") I am willing to step up and coordinate the whole thing a bit. But this all needs a few more people. Anyone wanting to help with this is welcome. Also please keep in mind that the things I mentioned are just ideas and discussion is very much welcome. What are your thoughts? Who's in? Regards, vinz.

Hi Vinzenz, Count me in to create some buzz. Content-wise, I won't commit now, but I'll see perhaps if I can create some videos featuring desktop features. I see that you've posted on the openSUSE Marketing list as well. Guessing by the inaction on the mailing list in the previous months, I am continuing the discussion here. your initiative sounds very interesting but as far as content creation is concerned I do not have the right skills such as video editing or graphics design. There are at lot of people who are way better in this regard than me. I love writing texts though and I am running an openSUSE blog called "Tumbleweed Adventures" in German. https://tumbleweed-adventures.blogspot.com/ Should you need somebody for press relations and writing I am definetely interested.
What are your thoughts? Who's in?
I am interested. Would communication of the Marketing-Team be handled through a dedicated mailing list, Discord etc.? 1) Create content
This leads me to our Wiki what needs more love, care and support. But I see your other important points, too.
- ask people running booths to report
Good point. I made two in 2019 in will write a report for opensuse-marketing.
2) Create buzz - push stuff from 1) to any platform online Also a great point: Every community memeber who is on Twitter, Mastodon, FB etc. should push our fantastic stuff and promote our friendly OS. :-)
- invite to chats, forums etc. to discuss things
We are allready doing this with Telegramm, Matrix, Discord etc. and wie should do promote this more.
3) Keep following up - run regular onboarding events for new people interested to help
We lately thought about maybe to run an edit-a-athon for the Wiki to check if the articles are up-to-date and translated. Maybe this could be an onboarding event? Hi Vinz and fellow chameleons, really great idea! What about a possibility for internet content to be published on openSUSE? Like my game reviews or distro articles on openSUSE as a gaming platform might be relevant for these marketing efforts. For example this base article on opensuse gaming: https://www.holarse-linuxgaming.de/wiki/opensuse or the article on "how to turn opensuse into a gaming machine" article for leap 15.0: https://www.holarse-linuxgaming.de/news/opensuse_leap_15_als_linuxsystem_f%C... Beside the fact that these articles are in german they might be interesting for a wider opensuse audience. Wasn't opensuse planet some kind of blog aggregation for this purpose? We do that every 4 years, following the Leap cycle and TW/Leap wallpapers are meant to be complementary. Hi Vinz, Count me in in this initiative. I believe many people already did these "marketing" activities but maybe in un-coordinated way. Me and Indonesia community doing this since a while ago. We even maintain our web/blog presence [1], twitter account [2], telegram group [3], mirror repositories [4,5], and countless community gathering. Of course we did that in our free time, thanks to friends, sponsors and openSUSE. Greetings, I am all about reviving the marketing team. I have made it a point to promote openSUSE in any of the circles I interact with other users. For instance, as part of the DestinationLinux.network, and Bigdaddylinux.com groups. I am also in a podcast called DLN Extend where I do promote openSUSE on a regular basis. There are a lot of pains you do not have when running openSUSE that I often hear from users on other Linux distros. I am MORE than happy to push any marketing messages or the new exciting tech that openSUSE has to offer. Hi Vinzenz, Nice initiative, you can count me in. I do not have artistic skills myself, but as president of a French openSUSE users association which is reasonably active, I will be happy to use this association as a local relay in France (that is what we are currently doing anyway through our forum, blog and Twitter accounts). I can help with the following points: - contacting people to "interview" them - write reports about the booth the association is holding ( 2 or 3 per year so far) and / or publish reports written by other local teams - translate marketing material (in French) Regards, PS: this message may have been received twice as the first try seems to have been discarded by the mailing-list daemon.
