[opensuse-project] Music distro

Hello team, After the mail that Bryen sent about Linux Audio Conference (http://lac.linuxaudio.org/2012/) and the passing of a musical university in Greece to open source, I thought to propose it. Can we make a distro focus on music with such software and codecs? Some of them areMixxx,Audacity,Rosengarden,Alsa Mixer,Ardour, jack control, jack server,JAmin,Musescore and many more. I'm not into music (only listen) and don't know what they need. I believe that it can be done easy to SUSE Studio (I didn't search if there's one). Personally I face some problems to setup my appliance with mysql and apache servers and a CMS like program. Have a lot of fun! Interesting idea, I was just surfing around a couple of weeks ago and came across AVLinux (which is Debian-based) and thought we ought to do a comparison of what exists there and what we could do as a Studio image. Of course, I haven't actually scanned around for whether we have something in Gallery for what you are proposing already. I think it is worth checking out, although a I think it should be broad to cover as much of media arts as possible, not just music. (Which is what AV Linux does.) well... making an "multimedia openSUSE" would be must for me, but the main problem is that of the crippled applications that are only provided by Packman and not tested enough. helping Packman and testing multimedia is important jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

I don't think that this is the right thread to be singling out Packman. But within that vein, obviously having a multi-media focused respin where more eyes are concentrated on the packages themselves would only further help whatever issues you feel Packman exists in this realm. I don't really understand what you mean (I'm a bit short in english, sorry) I just want to show that most multimedia packages are *not* available from openSUSE other than crippled (that is only as placeholder), and need packman. (think about ffmpeg). It's only due to legal problems everybody knows I don't think packman is available for Studio, or is it? Packman makes a great job, I couldn't live without them!! jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Ok then we got our wires crossed. :-) I understand better what you meant now. It's my understanding that we can use Packman with Studio images. However, maybe someone with more expertise on the legalese, can explain what pitfalls we need to consider when using Packman. So I could be wrong. To software patents, specifically. The matter is already very complicated, let's please try to be precise :D

Even if it were, I highly doubt certain packages could be used for a spin that would be hosted there.

Cool, but we need a lot of help, we're not far from extinction right now. -- -o) Pascal Bleser /\\ http://opensuse.org -- we haz green _\_v http://fosdem.org -- we haz conf

Add nted and timidity. The later I do not know if it works out of the box. Sometimes music people want a real time kernel, whatever that is ;-) Good project idea.
and many more.

It isn't so easy to make a good audio distro. I did it some time ago¹. It is more than just putting the packages together in SUSE Studio, you need VST-Support² to reach the musicans. You have to recreate the menus, cause there is all in Multimedia/Audio. I would love to see openSUSE in the Linuxaudio scene again. I still have the old stuff somewhere on my HDD, if you need something let it me know. I'm curious whether this should be considered as a "Music distro" or a MultiMedia distro. I think we can combine better efforts putting it all together rather than separate, and really, there's reasons why you want music creation functionality with video and vice versa. And P.S., I like "RockSUSI" and not just because it looks like my nick reversed. :-) Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Hi, while I haven't read the entire thread yet, I'd just like to mention the Jacklab Project [1], i.e. make you aware of it. It has been an audio-focused derivative of openSUSE for quite a long time but is now discontinued. Maybe you can get in touch with its creators to get some more inspiration und suggestions.
