[opensuse-project] SUSE Studio statistics vs openSUSE statistics
All, The SUSE Studio statistics and the openSUSE statistics don't seem to agree very well. Reference: <https://www.suse.com/company/press/2012/2/latest-suse-studio-user-statistics-demonstrate-growing-adoption-of-suse-based-software-appliances.html> <http://lizards.opensuse.org/2013/08/23/more-on-statistics/> "To date, there are more than 233,500 registered users who have built more than 1,128,000 appliances in SUSE Gallery. More information can be found at www.suse.com/products/susestudio/features/whats-new.html." SUSE Studio allows both SLES and openSUSE appliances to be built, but it seems reasonable to assume the majority of the above are working with openSUSE. Those are pretty massive numbers. Comparing those numbers to the openSUSE numbers something seems wrong. Total ISO downloads of openSUSE is measured in 100's of thousands per month. Unique UUIDs is less than 500K. RE: downloads The most popular appliance in the SUSE Studio gallery is an opensuse based appliance <http://susestudio.com/a/TadMax/owncloud-in-a-box>. That one appliance has been downloaded over 30,000 times. I assume that's 30,000+ downloads that were missed. The total openSUSE downloads should be increased by the openSUSE appliance downloads from susestudio? Is the number of openSUSE based appliance downloads available? Is it available by openSUSE release? Can anyone provide a count of downloads in recent months? RE: Users Well under 500K openSUSE users and yet there are almost 250,000 SUSE Studio users. That seems hard to believe. I'm guess the 250,000 is cumulative. Is there a way to get a count of how many of those accounts have had even a single login in the last 12 months? RE: UUIDs It seems unbelievable that there is a million plus appliances and less then 500K UUIDs getting updates. Do VM appliances downloaded from susestudio then run inside a VM each get a unique UUID, or are the multiple instances failing to be counted? Is there someway going forward to have the UUID encode the source of install. ie. From a normal openSUSE ISO of from a SUSE Studio download. Maybe the appliances tend to be used and not updated via the update repos? Looks like. Yes.
Those are pretty massive numbers. Comparing those numbers to the openSUSE numbers something seems wrong.
Is not wrong, we simply can't compare those two numers: - openSUSE numbers are counting users / installations per week / month - SUSE studio is accumulating this number For openSUSE statistics we open a time window and check how many installations or download we see during this time frame. If we want to accumulate the downloads is easy: simple add quantities until you reach the end of the series. But this do not work with users, because there is a subset of users that you can see every week / month and need to be counted only one. This methodology is better to measure how live is the project: this automatically discard non-active users that we simply do not see anymore.

No. Unique UUIDs per month.
The total openSUSE downloads should be increased by the openSUSE appliance downloads from susestudio? Is the number of openSUSE based appliance downloads available? Is it available by openSUSE release?
They are not related, we are counting the different medias that the user can download from software.o.o (DVD, Net, GNOME, KDE, ....) Those are the real ISOs from openSUSE project.
Can anyone provide a count of downloads in recent months?
We are working on it. Yes : )
RE: Users
Well under 500K openSUSE users and yet there are almost 250,000 SUSE Studio users.
Again: 500K users per month vs. 250K total users. We can't compare both units. To make a fair comparison we need to count the number of different UUIDs seens over the same period of time that SUSE Studio is considering (full 2011 year if I am not wrong)
That seems hard to believe. I'm guess the 250,000 is cumulative.
Exactly.
It seems unbelievable that there is a million plus appliances and less then 500K UUIDs getting updates.
I don't think so. If the appliance is not installed o never updated, this appliance is not counted. SUSE Studio is awesome in many ways. I created ISOs in interative ways. For my final ISOs I created like 3 or 4 candidates, but I only used one. SUSE Studio is so powerfull that I can create multiple ISOs to experiment. I guest that all that ISOs are counted, including the bad ones. In either case the use case on this ISO was self contained: I do not expect to install the ISO and to update it regularly.
Do VM appliances downloaded from susestudio then run inside a VM each get a unique UUID, or are the multiple instances failing to be counted?
Probably they share the UUID. True. Something like this can happend with the Live version. Numbers do not need to be precise to explain the trend. There will be always a bias and error in the measure, but we have enough confidence that the general shape of the graph will the same.
Maybe the appliances tend to be used and not updated via the update repos?
This is what I believe too.

Great, and I argue a downloaded openSUSE appliance from SUSE Studio should count as a ISO download, but I can see the other side of that argument as well.
