[opensuse-project] bugzilla.opensuse.org - where should it redirect to?
I have a bug report against our infrastructure that asks to have bugzilla.opensuse.org a valid host name. For details see: http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=549585 I'm aware of these two options a) point bugzilla.o.o directly to bugzilla.novell.com b) point bugzilla.o.o to bugs.opensuse.org Using a) is what most people would expect, directly going to bugzilla. On the other hand I expect that new people enter bugzilla.o.o and option b) would show them good information on how bugs are handled inside openSUSE. I think it's reasonable to do this and like to hear whether anybody has strong arguments on what to do, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Program Manager openSUSE, aj@{novell.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

I'd vote for b) after the page has been reworked a bit to make it easier to consume. It could include stuff like - Get me to bnc directly (incl. a checkbox "always put me directly to bnc") - A simple search line to search in the latest stable release - Some info about what is a bug, what a feature - A link to a page explaing how to report bugs - A link "How you can dive in deeper" with info about testing of Factory, screening etc. - Links to bugzilla and openFATE Other stuff? Good idea but is it easy doable?

Some really good ideas. Who likes to help with these? Good idea but is it easy doable? I could imagine that a little bit of Javascript sets a cookie into your browser if you check the box. Another bit of Javascript could check if the cookie is there and redirect if so. Did not try to implement it, but should work.
Some really good ideas. thanks :-)
Who likes to help with these? yeah!

A simple question for clarification: If somebody types the URL bugzilla.o.o in the browser, wouldn't you expect that person to know what he's doing and trying to get straight to the bottom of it, i.e. the actual bugzilla site, to search for an existing bug report or submit a new bug? At least that's what I thought but I might be wrong. It's certainly good to have a page like bugs.o.o anyway, no doubt. I don't care which way it goes, but I will say that currently finding the bugzilla site is surprisingly difficult. My natural inclination is to type "bugzilla.o.o" and it obviously fails, so I end up googling for it (if I don't have a link handy). It would be nice to see it as part of the standard list of links on major entry point pages such as <http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org> It's sort of feels like it is hidden currently. (I don't actually think that is the case, but it feels that way regardless.) The bug report is blocked for me, but I'd say Option B. A quick read through the "Reporting a Bug" section can help first-time testers write better bug reports, and I'd say that outweighs a little inconvenience. On a similar note, what do y'all think about putting a link in openSUSE 11.3 milestones on the desktop linking to the wizard for searching and filing a bug in Bugzilla, similar to this: http://lizards.opensuse.org/2009/08/23/1-click-bug-reporting/ This would expedite the filing process, and presumably by then people have read the Submitting Bug Reports page? -- Kevin "Yeaux" Dupuy - http://www.twitter.com/KevinYeaux openSUSE Project Member - <kevin.dupuy@opensuse.org> President, Young Americans for Liberty at BHS <http://www.yaliberty.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
