[opensuse-project] GSoC Idea : Porting bento to Twitter Bootstrap
Hi Guys, I am Raghu Nayyar, a third year undergraduate from BITS Pilani University, India. I was going through the list of ideas for Google Summer of Code 2013 by openSUSE and found interest with *Porting bento to twitter bootstrap*. I have been a regular contributor as an Interaction Designer and Developer to ownCloud[1] since quite some time now and have a proficiency in HTML, CSS, Git and JavaScript along with a sound knowledge about Interface and Interaction Design. I have forked the GitHub repository[2] for openSUSE-themes and I am ready to contribute. Please help me getting started with it and also redirect me to the right person. Thanks a lot in advance! Great that you're interested in one of the Ideas but hold your horses :-) There is a time line for GSoC[¹] and we're currently in the process of gathering Ideas and Mentors for our application to be a mentoring organization. Once we are accepted you can apply to be a student for that project, once you are accepted from the mentor you can start hacking :)
Please help me getting started with it and also redirect me to the right person.
Like I've said, for GSoC you can not start yet. BUT if you're looking to get going for that idea in general I'm more than happy to guide you. Just get in contact with me :) Henne [¹] http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/events/google/gsoc2013 -- Henne Vogelsang http://www.opensuse.org Everybody has a plan, until they get hit. - Mike Tyson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
Hey Henne,
I had a conversation on the IRC with Stephen Kulow (coolo) about the
project and I made my first commit on my fork of repository under the
branch bootstrap-themifying[1] about fixing the header styling. You
can have a look there. I don't mind going forward with the idea,
rather I like it.
I will firstly like to themify the mockup given in the repository and
clean it's CSS, I guess that would be the right way to get going.
Please let me know if it is fine.

Just a small note: One annoying thing in the CSS is that all content inside a box needs to have some margin-left/right. This also means we have to use some workarounds like "width:96%" for a "full-width" textarea. (This is used for some textareas in the buildservice IIRC.) It would be much easier if the box has a padding instead, so that the content inside can just use "width:100%". To make things more interesting, there are also cases (for example the "Editors Note" header backgrounds on http://en.opensuse.org/Archive:Weekly_news_130) where the background needs to touch the box borders. I'd guess this is solvable with a negative margin ;-) Regards, Christian Boltz --

This is coming from the base css where the styling of the native elements is written along with all the other CSS. Mostly as we continue involving Bootstrap, we can be done with that CSS, or atleast most of it as bootstrap has it's own.
It would be much easier if the box has a padding instead, so that the content inside can just use "width:100%".
I feel we shouldn't start with "%" based styling as it will definitely spoil the look at lower resolutions. As soon as all components as merged in, then we can take care of it's responsive aspect. I am currently not using the fixed layout from bootstrap as the first concern should be to get the components done. Though, I have fixed the error you mentioned above. Check : https://github.com/raghunayyar/opensuse-themes/commit/10ce35ea7265c61e13bee3...

Will definitely have a look into that.
