[opensuse-project] How to name the baby
OK, guys and girls, just as an alternative for those of you who can't warm up to LEAP or other names provided so far, here are two more (and my last) suggestions from my idea-sheet and some associations that may go with them. I'm sure, you will find the drawbacks yourself: openSUSE Emerald - dark-green - solid - durable (long term idea) - transparent - precious, a gem - "our finest" - something you want to have - something you want to keep openSUSE Base - solid - good starting point - something to build on - rather neutral - down to earth - factual - short - for work/business Have a good week! We should just stop. Actively looking for "identities" (names, attached meanings, even icons) is a disaster. The best things are those that unconciously come to mind, and after that, things that are totally unrelated (like the cone icon is to VLC). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

How many names to choose from do we have? 5? 10? That's not too opulent for an important decision you have to live with for several years. You can always make a short-list!
Actively looking for "identities" (names, attached meanings, even icons) is a disaster.
Nonsense.Tell that the prof. name-finding-agencies and get LOL. Got a briefing and then wait 2 years until something pops up? You need a search-tension to come up with ideas - be it in science, advertising or anywhere else. If you're not looking for something how can you expect to find it?
The best things are those that unconciously come to mind, and after that, things that are totally unrelated (like the cone icon is to VLC).
Says who? And who says those names provided so far did NOT come up unconciously? They were provided later in the process - that's all. And BTW: apodictical statements like "The best this", "The only way that" "Without alternative" etc. are nothing but idea-killer-phrases and always suspect - at least to me. Jim, I've just read on pro-Linux.de that the launch is planned for November! Jeeeezzzzz -that's like: "tomorrow"! That means pre-marketing should kick into higher gear now. Concepts, wordings, graphics have to be prepared, discussed, revised, implemented etc. pp. And there's almost no time left! I really propose to use a new name for the baby! Because - if I see it rightly - the new release could mean no less than a new era for the project. Therefore it would be a sad waste of opportunity to simply call it just 13.3 or even 14! In my view, there's enough information to find and choose an appropriate one. Suggestions have been made. Hoping to find the perfect one is an illusion. Especially when you're running out of time. July, August, September, October: 4 months. I'd say that's ambitious for a well-planned, -prepared and -implemented launch of a key-product! In addition, the holiday season is beginning. Yep. I don't know about other parts of the world, but in mine we do very little in July-August. It's the holiday season. Yes, offices. Volunteers on their free time are not usually at the office ;-) Me, I'm not at home, I have much fewer resources now. If we want to produce a nice marketing campaign we need time to plan it, align concepts and people for the proper actions on different platforms and scenarios. There are volunteers not paid people to spread the word. So limited time, resources and people to make it happen. After all this release is not an add-on to something existed before. So it deserve a special treatment. Regards, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

I am aware of the volunteer nature of the community, thanks.

I'm convinced. So then, as a community, let's figure out what this release is about and *then* we can decide on naming. May be I leaped a bit too far ahead but I thought that would - in substance - be clear already: - Long-term-support (3 - 5 years) - ultimate stability (SUSE-packages) - plus room for openSUSE to make it really outstanding In short: a "SuperSUSE" ;) (just a joke - not a suggestion!) For more clues (and the launch date): https://news.opensuse.org/2015/06/26/work-begins-on-totally-new-opensuse-rel... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH99TSrfvq0 As you can see, this is already out in the public. So it seems to me it's perhaps not too early to slowly come to a conclusion about the name. My comment was keeping in the theme of "42" (ie, H2G2 - "Don't Panic" being what's on the cover of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).
