[opensuse-project] openSUSE 11.0 Greeter, Desktop Icons, Bookmarks
Hello, string freeze for openSUSE 11.0 is coming up in two week so it's again rather late to decide how we want the distribution point back to the project sites. - Shall we keep the setup with two different desktop icons (one starting the first-time openSUSE greeter and one pointing to http://help.opensuse.org)? - What greeter text? Shall it directly link to http://forums.opensuse.org? - Shall browser bookmarks have forums.o.o, shop.o.o and buildservice.o.o? - Is www.opensuse.org the best browser start page or do we want to have something like other distros which include some web search etc.? are some of the questions which come to my mind. Bye, Steve --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Yeah, why not?
- Is www.opensuse.org the best browser start page or do we want to have something like other distros which include some web search etc.?

Exactly, I had the web start sites of http://start.fedoraproject.org/ and http://mandriva.com/en/community/start in mind when writing it. :-) For now the question is only if we want to have something like this so we can change the default URL of the browsers. Until it gets implemented eg http://www.opensuse.org/start can show/redirect to http://www.opensuse.org Bye, Steve --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Maybe it would be possible to have a page that is pretty clean, has google search, _and_ links to build.o.o, en.o.o, news.o.o help.o.o at the same time. Maybe it could also have latest item(s)/headings from news.o.o. ...naturally a few geekos would need to be around too. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

why not simply add a search engine to the www.opensuse.org page, there is plenty room for it jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://clairedodin.voices.com/ http://www.clairedodin.com/ http://claire.dodin.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I personally am not that great a fan of the greeter, but I suppose it does have its uses. I do think that having the help.o.o icon is useful and should be kept. I think the above links should be included as well as help.o.o, software.o.o/search and opensuse-community.org in the bookmarks. Keeping www.opensuse.org as the home page is a good idea. What don't you like about it -- is this something that can be improved, or is it you don't like the concept itself? Best,

Most likely the latter, i always get the feeling of screen spam. Then again I get the same feeling from the GIMP and KDE with the tips :) I accept that it is a needed item for welcoming new users and I'll just have to stop moaning, is there a "what's new" bit for regular users (I know it is in the release notes) but having a summary would be kind of good? Sorry if it is there, I tend to just go straight for the close button when it pops up without reading it; sods law I'll have missed the winning lottery numbers. My guess would be that here is a veto upcoming because opensuse-community.org content/domain is not under control of Novell. Sure. I'm curious about Andrew's input on the greeter, though.
- Shall browser bookmarks have forums.o.o, shop.o.o and buildservice.o.o?
Sure. Also, we should probably drop the cool solutions link, or change it to: http://www.novell.com/communities/ What about a link to Planet SUSE?

I think a Web search page would be more useful -- nothing against www.opensuse.org, but I wouldn't find it a useful start page. Same es for opensuse-community.org (not under control of Novell)?
- Is www.opensuse.org the best browser start page or do we want to have something like other distros which include some web search etc.? I think a Web search page would be more useful --
What I would like to see is a minimized version of the three www bars, some search field with the options to "(x) Search the web ( ) Search openSUSE ( ) Search software" (latter using software.opensuse.org/search), two feeds with the latest from news.o.o and forums.o.o and maybe some content from help.o.o
nothing against opensuse.org, but I wouldn't find it a useful start page.
I think too that people are changing homepage URL very quickly from that. Bye, Steve --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
Why not create the page "greeter.o.o" and point the browser there.then it can change and have rss feeds and ....... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Bye, Steve
The icons and bookmarks are fine with me, but I have a suggestion about the greeter. I think it should contain more links to different openSUSE websites and pointers for the desktop rather than background info on Linux. Also, I proposed an idea, I think on the opensuse-wiki mailinglist, for a web start page with web search and openSUSE User News. I would love to see that implemented in openSUSE 11.0 rather than the openSUSE homepage. -- Kevin "Yo" Dupuy | Public Mail <kevin.dupuy@opensuse.org> | Yo.media: 225-590-596 Swift Change for a Green Future: Kat Swift for President www.VoteSwift.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Probably the best example I've seen for an idea like this is Ubuntu's new homepage http://start.ubuntu.com/8.04/ -- Kevin "Yo" Dupuy | Public Mail <kevin.dupuy@opensuse.org> | Yo.media: 225-590-5961 Swift Change for a Green Future: Kat Swift for President www.VoteSwift.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
