This is not possible in some cases without a real opensuse.org mail server.

*Some* people have told me that they can not mail me at my opensuse.org alias because it bounces at an intermediate step when it fails some verification step (DMARC or SPF, I think).

This issue was officially reported years ago, ticket #4876

Carlos, for the purpose of this vote, it is irrelevant. Any notification in this respect will no doubt be sent from an opensuse.org address, which does not publish an SPF record. Hi all, I am not an openSUSE member and therefore not eligible to vote. But nonetheless I would like to express my opinion here and encourage you to keep the existing and well-established name. I have seen really big companies investing millions in campains to communicate a name change - and in my perception they still failed, and in the end they lost part of their visibility in the public. For openSUSE that would be a bitter setback. The name openSUSE stands for an open, rock-solid, powerful and community driven distribution. This is a treasure that we must not risk recklessly. Perhaps it's too late for this question to be relevant for this upcoming vote, but: looking further into the future, is it really necessary to require a @opensuse.org address for participation in these kinds of procedures? It seems to me like an extra hurdle which will just add more opportunities for things going wrong and hence less participation. In my case, I had completely forgotten that I even had one of these @opensuse.org addresses - or maybe I never even knew in the first place. Either way, I only (re)discovered it by reading more of this thread and then realising that perhaps I could find out either way by logging in to connect.opensuse.org (which I had a vague memory of doing at some point in the past). Admittedly I am far from a model member of the community, since I only participate sporadically and don't manage to regularly keep up with all the lists. But I'm sure there are others like me. I'm sure I'm not the only one who didn't have time to closely follow them as they arose, but with the imminent vote, now is a good time to go back and catch up on the arguments for and against.

Personally I agree with many others that while a fresh logo might be of benefit, changing the brand away from the well-loved and trusted "openSUSE" and geeko would be chucking away something very valuable and a big mistake. Similarly with the "green-ness". People are inherently tribal and often feel strong loyalty to certain colours / emblems etc.

I appreciate that getting rid of "SUSE" from the name might make certain issues around trademarking etc. easier, and that that might free up some of the board's time to work on other valuable stuff, but I'm really worried about the risk of the project fading away into oblivion as a result.

This is an important reason, trademarks, accepting donations directly, etc.

Trying to sever the visible links with SUSE gives a worryingly familiar "binding the hand that feeds you" feeling to me, just like what my idiotic government is currently trying to do with the EU :-( The relationship with SUSE has been mutually beneficial for many, *many* years. I'd much prefer we continue to embrace that, working with SUSE to smoothen processes around trademarks etc. where needed, rather than just cutting the ties and sending a loudly misleading message to the whole world. I can already imagine the headlines misinterpreting it... "openSUSE votes to break free from tyranny of its commercial master" :-(

opensuse.org email alias (full) --> opensuse.org email alias (target)

AFAIK the "email alias (target)" field is only visible for admins. OTOH, there is a "Contact email" field which is more public (depending on a user's settings) and user-editable, but it has nothing to do with the @opensuse.org alias.

You are ;-) We have a cronjob that regularly (IIRC hourly) gets the aliases and targets from connect.o.o and feeds them to the SUSE mailserver (which also handles opensuse.org). Nevertheless, mailing admin@o.o is the preferred way so that we have mail alias changes tracked.
