I note that there is no explicit option on the ballot for "None of the above", though it does seem to be possible to cast a ballot with none of the names selected. Will such ballots be counted and reported as such? In the present case, two individuals opting for one position, what possible use is a null vote or the statistics of one? -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Indeed, that's a great question. I find the suggestion for a null vote rather peculiar. As the position can't be left vacant, any vote for "None of the above" is probably best interpreted as casting a vote for "Someone else". (Alternative interpretations like "objecting for the sake of objecting" would be a little too cynical even for me.) But no other people have volunteered to do the work. So isn't a blank vote as practical and as meaningful as voting for unicorns or wishing for a free ticket on the first spaceship to Andromeda? If anyone doesn't wish either of these candidates to serve on the Board, I think a more productive use of their energies would be to ask themselves what they could have done to give the community a choice they would have voted for. - Rich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

I don't see how.

In terms of who gets elected to the position, a blank vote has the same effect as not voting at all. But the semantics are quite different, since the voter has at least attempted to make a positive statement that, at this stage in the process, they are powerless to help effect an outcome to their liking.
If anyone doesn't wish either of these candidates to serve on the Board, I think a more productive use of their energies would be to ask themselves what they could have done to give the community a choice they would have voted for.
That's a false dichotomy -- there's no reason why someone can't do both. Someone who had considered running themselves, or who had attempted (and failed) to recruit candidates they feel are qualified, can still decline to vote for the candidates who actually made it to the ballot. But even if someone didn't do this work in the early stages of the election doesn't mean that they should be pressured to support any one candidate. Speaking generally, a "none of the above" vote (in cases where this is an option) sends a message that the voter has an interest in the composition of the Board but does not believe that any of the candidates are suitable. Where no "none of the above" option exists, spoiling the ballot or leaving it blank may be the next-best thing, though that sometimes leaves open the interpretation that the voter made a mistake when voting. (I don't believe it's the case here, since the system we use conspicuously warns voters that they are casting a blank ballot.) Simply not voting is the most ambiguous option, since that could be interpreted as the voter not knowing or caring about the election. It could indicate that you consider both candidates equally suited (or equally something else) and do not have a strong preference, yet do not want to appear as someone who simply does not care. In the last year we had several requests to add a way to abstain while still "showing up", hence this possibility. Whether/how one uses that option is his/her sole decision, and one I respect.
