The more I hear about ALP, the less I like the idea, openSUSE should keep leap
Well.. Noticed that chairman didn't wanted to be involved.. From the tread at Users mailing list. Start a new tread here. Regards

re: chairman comment, I don't believe that is quite what he conveyed. perhaps more like he would reserve comment until he had a better understanding of the project. doesn't appear that many outside the project are very well informed about it. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

Well its not generally the role of the board to make technical decisions unless there is a conflict between contributors around how to do something that can't be resolved in another manner. I wrote more in the thread on the other list but as long as people are willing to contribute I don't think it will be as bad as some people are making it out to be. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

Leap is dependant on the SLE codebase in order to exist That SLE codebase is transforming into ALP, or to put a more dramatic spin on it, SLE as we know it is ending. This is an unavoidable fact - it's decisions made by SUSE, for SUSE's buisness, to make SUSE money. Therefore, Leap as we know it, is ending. What comes next is not so set in stone. ALP in the context of openSUSE _COULD_ end up being very close to what SUSE are making commercially and just made available to openSUSE to sprinkle some community additions atop. That would arguably be very close to Leap in terms of how it's made..but not how it's used, which is I guess the crux of your objections. If you want something that would be USED very similar to Leap, you and all the other people like you are going to have to help make it. Like Gerald implied in his post to users@, it's really down to those building/maintaining the distros. If people don't make something that you want, then I'm afraid you're just going to be stuck with what the people who make stuff want to make.

It is unlikely that an openSUSE Foundation would raise enough money annually to employ enough developers for a project on any scale to fix this. That was never the intention of a foundation. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

First, it's spelt openSUSE. It's never been spelt with an uppercase 'o', and SUSE ceased being called 'SuSE' for years before openSUSE was created, so "OpenSuSE" is, was, and hopefully always will be, very wrong. Second, I'm not sure why you think I'd have anything to do with that. While I was openSUSE Chairperson for 5 years, I ceased holding that role over 3 years ago. Third, I'm even less sure what relevance it has to the points I was discussing. Even without a foundation today people could contribute and steer things if they wanted to. If they don't, they'll just be left with what is made available by those who do the work. Adding a foundation won't change that, nor do I expect more people to contribute just because some legal entity exists.

Although you are not addressing me, I fail to understand the relevance of this snarky comment in this thread. In regards of the foundation topic, I invite you to read the last Board meeting minutes and feel free to start a new thread. Best, Maurizio
Hello I recommend to attend https://events.opensuse.org/conferences/oSC23 to all of those concerned. We'll have session about Leap Next planning as well as updates from ALP. People can ask in person or watch recordings to get more context. The pace of ALP development is quite fast and this is a nice opportunity to get a usable overview of where are we now and upcoming timeline and be able to ask questions.
