[opensuse-project] Sponsoring for and on openSUSE
Hi all, I asked in our last IRC meeting for your opinion on getting sponsors for openSUSE. To reach all of you I ask additionally on the mailinglist. We're currently looking for sponsors for the Build Service - hardware, bandwith and money. That's to increase performance and get broader backing for the whole project. The sponsors obviously want something back - presence. We'd like to offer them logo visibility at opensuse.org, build.opensuse.org and some high frequent pages like the downlaod pages. We'd reserve one place for a logo which is used randomley by all sponsors and won't be flashy, blinking images or similar. And we're talking only to companies in the IT environment. Let me know what you're thinking about it. why not :-)
Build Service - hardware, bandwith and money
did you ask sourceforge/ibiblio?
Let me know what you're thinking about it.
In my opinion, you can have two kind of "sponsors" * relatively small companies that can share some computer power and will really gain visibility doing so. You didn't say what kind of help "size" you want (is it one computer, distributed power "a la seti home", $10 or $10^6?) * big ones (IBM, SUN, HP...) and for these, you a better placed than we are :-) but the gift can be much more jdd -- http://www.dodin.net Le manuel d'optique de Lucien Dodin http://lesprismes.free.fr/optique/index.html --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
IMHO, this is great idea ! Because I think, that expanse of the OpenSource software in general is just a sweet dream without serious and continuous support and cooperation from/with commercial "companies". What I am trying to say is : No Money No Jazz ... Personally I would like to see the logos of great commercial Linux supporters :) But there is one thing, which could earn some coins to openSuSE : Small presents thingies like T-Shirt, Mug, Cap or just stickers for PCs/laptops etc. People can say, thousand reasons why not to sell some stuff like this, for example cause u need a producer, distributor etc. for these thingies, but I am just wondering, why Novell won't take care of it? Second reason one could say is that nobody will buy these things. I say that people who even love Microsoft would never wear the cap with white M$ logo, but I think that most of the openSuSE users would love to wear GreenLizzard wherever and by this way let the others know "Hey, you know this is a logo of my favourite Linux distro !" I hope I wasn't emotional too much ;) Best whishes with gathering some money for MY FAVOURITE :) KaiSVK On Friday 23 February 2007 13:46, Michael Loeffler wrote:

That's on our to-do list. We have now addtional backing form Novell's Product Marketing team and need to talk to some vendor who could do this for us.

So far, the openSUSE project has primarily been sponsored by Novell, and Novell has the biggest influence on the whole project. If there were new sponsors, wouldn't it be likely that they do not only want "presence" but also some (whatever that might be) influence on the project or (at least) the build service? It might be seen as a good thing or a bad thing, I haven't made up my mind about it yet. I am just curious how Novell plans to deal with this subject (influence on the project, administration of the whole project, etc.) in the future. If it's only about "presence", I can't see a problem. Ummm... is it just me or... don't they already get the great openSUSE Build Service ? If they want to use it and "invest" into it to make sure the quality, build power, etc... is available, they should sponsor it. Don't you think it's enough of a benefit for them ? cheers - -- -o) Pascal Bleser http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/ /\\ <pascal.bleser@skynet.be> <guru@unixtech.be> _\_v The more things change, the more they stay insane. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFF4hc0r3NMWliFcXcRAvOGAJ4juREDyPHGd3vjqgd1g1N4HL+7NQCfellr UN0mPRpArjo7OKUVWzlzVj8= =8GtD -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

What advantage do the companies that have the highest potential to sponsor such hardware draw out of that?
If they want to use it and "invest" into it to make sure the quality, build power, etc... is available, they should sponsor it.
Well, it is always easy to say someone should to this or that. If they don't do so it does not really help.
Don't you think it's enough of a benefit for them ?
Have you ever talked to companies to gain some money for a project? Sure, you can get some for technical solutions if a company does have some real interest in what you produce. But it is much easier and you get much more money if you attribute their contribution at a popular place. It is like sport sponsoring. Sure an athlet can get some equipment sometimes if he agrees to give feedback about the quality to the manufacturer. But life gets much easier for him if he places a logo of this vendor somewhere onto his sportswear. Apart from that: What's wrong with placing a logo of the sponsors on the pages? I think this is just fair. Robert -- Robert Schiele Dipl.-Wirtsch.informatiker mailto:rschiele@gmail.com "Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur."
