[opensuse-project] openSUSE presence at SUSECon 2013?
Hi, In case you were not aware, SUSE has announced that SUSECon 2013 will be held in November 2013 around Orlando (Florida, USA). If you want more details, see: https://www.suse.com/company/press/2012/11/suse-announces-location-and-dates... In 2012, we organized an openSUSE Summit after SUSECon: SUSE sponsored us by providing the venue (and some help with logistics), so we were able to focus on the content and on the on-site organization during the event itself. Thanks again to Bryen and Alan who lead that effort! Now, SUSE is offering us to do something similar in 2013. Of course, we'd need to move fast if we want to do that (as the venue needs to be secured for additional days). There have been people suggesting that we should also have a booth during SUSECon, or even suggesting that our openSUSE presence should happen during SUSECon (as part of it?) to decrease the amount of work needed for the organization. Obviously, there's the "will it conflict with the openSUSE conference?" question :-) We'll have some news about the conference in the next few days, but the short summary is that there should be more time between the two events than this year, so it should go much better from that perspective. So, please reply to this thread, or directly to the board, or to me, with your thoughts. This will also be a topic we'll discuss next week, in the next project meeting. And ideally, we'll be able to tell SUSE if we want to do something, and if yes, what. I vote 'Aye'! On a personal level, November would work much better for me to attend. More important, if a second Summit does not happen alongside SUSECon, people outside the project may jump to the conclusion that the first openSUSE Summit was a failure (or at least "not worth doing again"). Yes, I think we should have an openSUSE Summit in a similar format to this years event. Having a booth at SUSECon would be great, but I would not intermingle the content, i.e. have an openSUSE track at SUSECon. I think we would be well served to have a "separate" event even if it does immediately follow SUSECon.

I have one big issue with this statement. The way you present the information sounds a lot like "SUSE will make the decision of when and where and you better like it". Considering the history of location discussion (what was promised last year, and the rumblings at oSC 12) and that there has been silence about the topic after oSC 12 I get the bad feeling that this whole topic is not going to go over well. In any event considering that we want sufficient time between oSC 13 and SUSECon/openSUSE Summit and that many conferences happen in July/August/September we might have to consider oSC 13 to take place in June or early July. As it is December already this would make it really difficult to pull off. Thus, a decision has to be made soon. Sorry if that sounded this way (and I'm not sure why it could, actually; re-reading the paragraph, I don't see anything that could imply what you said). I can assure you than the decision on such a topic was taken by the board, not by SUSE. And really, I was simply teasing an announcement that will come really soon, in order to explain why there would be no date conflict between a potential summit and the conference. Yes, usually, I avoid teasing, but in this case, we really need to quickly take a decision on "summit or not?", and this information is relevant for such a decision. Can you elaborate why? I was not at the summit so I don't know all the details but my gut feeling is that it would be interesting for us and for SUSE to have a deeper integration into SUSECon as openSUSE is a big part of what SUSE does. I can try, please excuse me if this turns out to be rather lengthy. The focus between SUSECon and the openSUSE Summit was (and probably will be for the next event) very different. SUSECon is/was intensely focused on existing and potentially new customers for SUSE Linux Enterprise and the content and schedule was tailored for this target. The openSUSE Summit was focused around community building and getting the word out about openSUSE. I can see potential drawbacks should the events be "merged": - In a merged event that has paying and non paying participants one is inevitably bound to have separate events, if any for the non paying participants, and thus lines of segregation are drawn. Such lines lead inevitably to mixed feelings that are usually expressed in statements that include "second class", "lesser value" and others. - The different foci of the conferences, as mentioned above, brings about a different atmosphere. Generally the atmosphere is such that the target audience "moves within their comfort zone". Right, wrong, or indifferent, a person having to look after the IT infrastructure for a bank may not necessarily be comfortable talking about product and infrastructure needs while knowing that there are a significant number of people present that are probably "not like minded". - Timing may also be an issue. For many people that volunteer and are interested in an openSUSE event it may be difficult to free up time during the week to attend an event. AT the same time most business people will not be interested in spending their weekend at a conference. Although, IOD is one conference I know off that generally starts on a Sunday and this does not take away from the number of people that are there for day 1. A lot shorter than I thought it might turn out.
