Why is that so much under the coat of exclusivity and not on a normal request - grant basis?

Why is that so much under the coat of exclusivity and not on a normal request - grant basis?
Because in our opinion, people with an @opensuse.org email do represent
the community to some extent when using that address to communicate with
others.
It isn't just an "@users.opensuse.org", it's stating you're part of the
community.
While, obviously, a person's opinion usually is just that... that
person's opinion, the visibility of it also means a certain amount of
responsibility.
That is why we chose not to give it to anyone who requests an
@opensuse.org, but only to people who are effectively part of the
community by contributing to it. Of course, it isn't easy to quantify
who contributes enough to get one and who doesn't, which is why we (the
board members) will vote on requests to decide.
At some point, we will set up a better mechanism, that is both more open
(in a sense that it isn't just the Board members who decide) and scales
better. But we haven't sorted all the details out yet, and at first,
we'll use the approach as above, in order to kick it off instead of
waiting another 2 months before we have the better process designed and
in place.
cheers
