[opensuse-project] Removing openSUSE 11.1 Packman repositories
We're going to remove the openSUSE 11.1 Packman repositories from our primary server and, hence, also our mirrors [1]. If you would like to keep a copy (for whatever reason, as they're unmaintained), make sure to pull the tree BEFORE MONDAY (2011-02-28). The reason, obviously, is that openSUSE 11.1 has gone End-Of-Life since mid-January [2], and as we're restructuring our repositories [3], we do need quite some extra space right now and don't want to put too much of a burden on our mirrors (there are a few rsync mirrors in there too). [1]Packman mirrors: http://packman.links2linux.de/MIRRORS.html [2]11.1=EOL:http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-security-announce/2011-01/msg00005.html [3]http://dev-loki.blogspot.com/2011/02/packman-service-interruption-and.html [4]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rsync cheers -- -o) Pascal Bleser <pascal.bleser@opensuse.org> /\\ http://opensuse.org -- I took the green pill _\_v FOSDEM XI: 5 + 6 Feb 2011, http://fosdem.org

That's sad. I disagree with 11.1 being unmaintained. Otherwise I would invest my time for nothing what is not very attractive. Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Well, we can stock up the filesystem for our primary FTP server, *but* the issues are also: - it is getting more and more difficult to build stuff against 11.1 (e.g. k3b requiring much newer KDE libraries), although stuff like mplayer/smplayer, vlc, ... would still work of course - it is also a burden on our mirrors Yes, in theory we could. Wouldn't it be better to actually build against the Evergreen repositories ? cheers -- -o) Pascal Bleser <pascal.bleser@opensuse.org> /\\ http://opensuse.org -- I took the green pill _\_v FOSDEM XI: 5 + 6 Feb 2011, http://fosdem.org

Pascal, The static 11.1 repos are now at: ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/11.1/ ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/source/distribution/11.1/ ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/update/11.1/ And as far as I know they are not mirrored. I have no idea how that server relates to the openSUSE / Novell. ie. Who owns it? By chance can the static packman final repo be pushed there as well? That would satisfy a significant part of the need. Then the full packman system / mirrors would only be needed for those packages which have libraries updated by Evergreen or are themselves upgraded for security reasons. What about ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/packman/suse/11.1? Or is that something else? OK, that stuff (37 GB) has now been copied to ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/packman-11.1. I updated the Evergreen wiki page to reflect the above. FYI: The repo file was not updated, but it doesn't seem to be a problem if the archived repo is added per the instructions on the wiki page. Okay, after discussing it... We're going to build our "Essentials" repository for 11.1, as we do for SLE_11 (and factory and tumbleweed), that should be doable. I think that would be a good idea. They have a mail list at "evergreen -at_ lists.rosenauer.org". - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Not knowing exactly what "Essentials" is but anyway it sounds good to me ;-). Thanks.

There is openSUSE:Evergreen:11.1 But it's actually just the continuation for openSUSE:11.1:Update and usually doesn't contain new libraries or similar things. And I basically agree that it gets harder over time to provide recent software. But it can make sense anyway to keep existing packages around. We're splitting things up into four repositories: * Essentials (11.2, 11.3, 11.4, Factory, Tumbleweed, SLE11SP1) * Multimedia (11.2, 11.3, 11.4) * Games (11.2, 11.3, 11.4) * Extra (11.2, 11.3, 11.4) Not sure what'll be in Extra yet, and we should normally manage to try to get most things from Games into obs://games. Essentials is stuff like mplayer, smplayer, vlc, ffmpeg, libmpg123, k3b-codecs, libxine1-codecs, gstreamer-*, ... Multimedia is less often used packages like LiVES, cinelerra, dvdauthor, 2ManDVD, gpodder, handbrake, mythtv, ... Of course, it's always debatable whether we should move something from Multimedia to Essentials but right now we've more or less identified a set of packages we see as "essential" and work on getting the whole thing going. Once it's all running smoothly, we can still discuss about individual packages (e.g. have mythtv for Evergreen, etc...).
Won't there be Evergreen repositories instead ?
There is openSUSE:Evergreen:11.1
Oh, awesome! I didn't notice :) Okay, that's perfect.
