[opensuse-project] Step Up for Google Code-In
Folks, Following the great results of the Google Summer of Code this year, we have a new opportunity in the coming months to bring in even more students into our community with the Google Code-In Contest. This is a contest aimed at pre-university students between the ages of 13-17 by providing them with a specific list of tasks to complete. You can read more about the program at http://www.google-melange.com/gci/homepage/google/gci2011. Our awesome Manu Gupta who lit the fire and revived our spirit for GSoC this year is at it again and lighting up our fires for Google Code In (GCI). You can see our own wiki pages here: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GCI http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GCI_Tasks How you can help: Visit the our task wiki page and add tasks you think would be good for students and helpful to our openSUSE Project. And even better, add yourself as a mentor to help guide these students who will be the future of our great community. Please notice that not all tasks must be coding-related. There's a variety of community/project/web-related tasks we can come up with for these students. Time is short and we need you to add to the task page soon. On November 9, we will hopefully be approved by Google and by November 21, these students will begin working until January 16, 2012. If you have any questions, please contact Manu or me and we'll be happy to be there for you! I just want to insist a bit on this: Code-In is amazing to get all kind of small contributions, and more importantly, to get new contributors! A lot of people can help mentor and shouldn't hesitate a second to step up, and there are most certainly hundreds of tasks we could list on the wiki page. We need to work on this now, as Google will review our list of mentors and list of tasks when deciding whether to approve our participation or not. So please take 15 minutes and go wild on http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GCI_Tasks ! Done. I'm a bit puzzled by the category "Packaging"... Packaging has a way too steep learning curve, IMHO. If you don't know how to build stuff from source, it's not even worth bothering about packaging, learn that first. It's not that it's impossible to learn, but it takes time, a lot of time if you start from scratch. I frankly don't see what could be learned pretty much from scratch and in a short period of time that would be relevant to that topic... any hints ? cheers -- -o) Pascal Bleser /\\ http://opensuse.org -- we haz green _\_v http://fosdem.org -- we haz conf

That doesn't exist in Google list as a category. http://code.google.com/opensource/gci/2011-12/index.html It can be included as a task under category "Training", something like "Course development 'Introductory to Packaging'". I would like to hear opinions so that I can fix wiki page; move to table of tasks, instead of categories. Also, I would recommend to redesign page so that mentors can sign tasks, not categories, unless they feel they are good in a whole category. The idea is to set categories as sections. Each section will contain list of tasks: * short task name suitable for daily use and subsection title ** short task description ** longer task description ** mentors that want to assist volunteers with link to user page on wiki or Connect openSUSE, where is stored actual contact information. This is what we should have in Junior Jobs (JJ) too. Volunteer that want to take JJ task and has a question, that is not answered in task description, must have contact person that is able to answer. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Done this too. The idea of having a few mentors in a category is if a mentor is not present for some unforeseen reason, and if one of the other members feel they can help the student, then the student can have direct contact points easily.
The idea is to set categories as sections. Yes.. that needs to be there, so instead of table do you suggest we move to something like this http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC_2011_Ideas
Similar to that. It has advantage over the table that is easy to add tasks, and also if one page is not enough, at the end add simple link (more...) to the next in list, plus there will be top right column (box) with navigation to other pages. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Did that but somehow the table of contents fall in the div, if you can help me with that it will be nice. Thanks a lot

I made a fix on the table, have a look and tell me if you need something more ;-) , also I separated the translation tasks added another task to documentation(Write 12.1 documentation based on older version documentation pages) and described the tasks I inserted.
Thanks a lot

Sorry to re-surrect such an old topic, but is this not something where the OBS generator could be interesting? For simple packages, I mean... Or does that lead to such horrible packages it's useless in any case?
cheers
