[opensuse-project] openSUSE on ZFS root?
Hi everyone, Are there any plans to support ZFS root installations with openSUSE? ***Without getting into the pros and cons of ZFS vs BtrFS***, I'd like to mention that there are a lot of people who would love to use ZFS on openSUSE. Ubuntu will be officially shipping and supporting ZFS with their 16.04 release, which is widely seen as a huge advantage for Ubuntu. I also noticed that ZFS is already packaged for openSUSE in the semi-official "filesystems" OBS repo, but I'm not sure how how well it works with openSUSE or if there are plans for better integration in the future? What about grub2 integration on openSUSE for ZFS boot environments? Again, please keep replies to this on-topic and don't start a technical debate about the merits of BtrFS vs. ZFS. Maybe we should start on the legal merit of ZFS vs BTRFS instead ? Seriously, ZFS is an out-of-tree project and I don't expect people spending time on integrating ZFS while we are probably the first distribution with a rocking support for an equivalent (if not better) filesystem which is integrated in upstream linux kernel. -- Frederic Crozat Enterprise Desktop Release Manager SUSE -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

This has been our stance since 2006: Developers of the kernel community consider non-GPL kernel modules to be infringing on their copyright. openSUSE does respect this position and will not distribute non-GPL kernel modules as part of products. Henne, just wondering out loud - is it also "is not allowed for legal reasons" or really only "will not"? If the latter, perhaps we should reconsider or even just leave it to the do-ocracy. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (12.7°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

We (distribution maintainers back then) have formed this opinion after considering all aspects of this situation.
