[opensuse-project] openSUSE Infrastructure "Vision"
As part of the "community transition" discussion on this list, the question of a "contingency plan" for openSUSE infrastructure came up. I'd like us to go one step back and ask what kind of infrastructure do we want to have in the long run and what kind of policies do we want to have? I know that I have seen a couple of discussions on infrastructure on mailing lists and had some with people face to face but we lack some kind of documented "vision" for our infrastructure. I'm asking this since the openSUSE infrastructure has grown over time and just making a "contingency plan" misses the chance, IMO we should define what kind of infrastructure the project needs and then work on that plan. So, one part of those principles could be these two: * do not relay completely on Novell data centers * have common authentification for all systems This could then lead to the following details: * Do not use ichain for authentification * setup a central user database, e.g. using ldap * Authentificate using oauth * Authentification with openID * Setup an openID provider and then we could ask already today for some folks to start working on a few of these items since they help the openSUSE infrastructure - independend of sponsorship. What do you think? What are your principles for our infrastructure? Any volunteer to collect the responses and write up a good proposal? very good action! We could add some details like "use virtual servers to allows very fast backup/recovery and infrastructure changes". I'm not a professional, but because I'm not a professional when I have to move data from a server to an other server I need, weeks :-) I begin to use VirtualBox virtual servers and like so, backups are done by virtual machines and moving a server is just a matter of hours (for me, much less for others). This is important, because a group like us may have to move servers very fast, in case our sponsor (being Novell or any other) fails jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Seems like a good idea, personally, I like the way it's handled for Studio, using openID. There shouldn't be a need to set up our own authentication mechanism when openID can handle that for us. Common authentication is a good idea as well. There shouldn't be any need for anyone to need more than one username/password/identity to participate in the openSUSE community. I also would say that reliance on Novell (or any sponsor) should be OK so long as there is an SLA in place to deal with both outages and if something should happen to the sponsor. I guess the best way to start is to list what we have today. I'm by no means aware of all of it, so this just what I can think of right now: mailing list setup forum setup news server bugzilla websites wiki-sites build service openfate -- Per Jessen, Zürich (16.2°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

That's for me a second step. First I want to collect what kind of infrastructure we *want* - instead of what we have ;) Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Program Manager openSUSE, aj@{novell.com,opensuse.org} Twitter: jaegerandi | Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Sorry, can't help you with that. (seems to me to define what we _want_, we would surely need to know for _what_). -- Per Jessen, Zürich (17.8°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
