[opensuse-project] 12.3 timing?
Coolo (or other), If 12.2 does slip by a couple months, what happens to the timing for 12.3? Does is stay where it was, or slip to 8 months after the 12.2 release? fyi: I'm more curious than pushing for one answer or the other. It just seems that how you handle the freeze will impact how the above works out. From what Coolo had mentioned on -factory ML, it seems the proposal is to skip 12.3 altogether. I interpret that to mean 12.2 will have a longer cycle until 13.1 is released.
However, given the new discussion about where development should evolve into, all this may change following community discussions. There's a number of interesting perspectives and ideas already discussed and the future releases may be a very different beast than what we see today. (e.g. proposal to make Tumbleweed the de facto release for openSUSE, thus making us more of a rolling-release distro.) I don't think a specific answer to your question is possible today until that conversation further evolves on -factory ML. In the short term, how close is the project to getting a date window for the 12.2 release? I see the "summit" is 21-23 September and I can't imagine it not being done and committed to media *after* that - it would be a PR nightmare. -- Twitter: http://twitter.com/znmeb Computational Journalism Server http://j.mp/compjournoserver Data is the new coal - abundant, dirty and difficult to mine. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

We are not basing the Summit on 12.2 release, nor have we done so for any of our openSUSE conferences in the past. In fact, our conferences have such a breadth of topics, that the openSUSE operating system topic is merely just a player at our community conferences. Heck, we don't even distribute DVDs to every attendee at openSUSE Conference, because most people already have it or downloaded it. That probably will be different for openSUSE Conference this year though since we are co-locating with other events, thus opportunity to get DVDs into the hands of a broader audience. I believe Coolo suggested releasing 12.2 around mid-September. Given the turn around time for minting PromoDVDs and shipping them to the U.S., I'm not convinced we'll be able to get them in time for the Summit. It would be *nice* if we could do that though, but definitely we're not planning around it. Postponing the Summit is not an option as we are given free space at the Orlando hotel following the SUSECon conference, which itself is also not based on openSUSE release. We either have the Summit or we don't. However, if you believe there is a correlation between PR and our conferences WRT openSUSE release, the main show is actually our openSUSE Conference in Prague in late October. Summit itself is more of a regional event to get community together that can't/won't be able to attend openSUSE Conference. But still, it will be a great show! :-) As we get closer to the Summit, we'll evaluate what we can do based on the status of 12.2 release. We may consider making DVDs in-house to distribute at the Summit. It would be a small number, thus doable, compared to the very large stash of PromoDVDs we order from a vendor with each release. Again, while I would love to see 12.2 released at Summit, I would not want to put such marketing consideration pressures on the -factory team. Those guys need to focus more on ensuring a good release rather than having us marketeers hanging over their shoulders nagging them. :-) Bryen M Yunashko openSUSE Project -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

But it would make sense to mint the promo DVDs in the US for a US event - that also prevents any possible hold-up due to customs and any import duties. I had thought at BrainShare, though, that it would have been nice if there were USB sticks with live media or the installation. The flash drives they gave out at the SUSE Linux Days 2012 event are 4 GB flash drives - not quite big enough for the install DVD but big enough for live media (a multi-boot live media USB flash drive with 32/64 bit versions of GNOME and KDE could be a good giveaway). That's not a bad idea. I actually like this idea and timing-wise it may be a more efficient solution for the Summit. No idea if there's enough budget for it though. I'll have to light up a dog and sacrifice a candle to push Jos to find funds for it. :-) Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Hello Jim, Bryen, USB was the solution last year for LinuxCon Brazil. The release happened a day before the event so Jos and other ambassadors worked A LOT to have openSUSE 12.1 in time. I'm not sure how many USB but no more than couple hundred. Izabel

Good to know a working solution has been done before and we can re-use the solution again. Of course all hinges still on Jos's budget and more importantly actual release date of 12.2. Coolo said "mid-September" but gave no actual date. At this point, all we can do is guesstimate our options until we know for sure what the new release plan is. Let's keep our fingers crossed that all stars and planets align in time. :-) Thanks, Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
The promo usb image that Ricardo Valverde has created to be used at Linuxcon could be found at SUSE Gallery http://susestudio.com/a/DpnFE6/linuxcon-opensuse-12-1-gnome-3-2 Another way we did was to give an usb containing the visitor's image created at studio, just after we show and guide they how to work and use OBS and STUDIO. - well ... It's not very useful and easy to put in practice because take a little time, so with me just 2 people had a chance to go back from our booth with a personal image created at STUDIO, copied to a nice openSUSE usb. 2012/6/15 Bryen M Yunashko <suserocks@bryen.com>:
