[opensuse-project] Fwd: [Reminder] GSoC Ideas on Ideas Page and Mentors
Hi, We have about 15 days to have a solid ideas page for Google Summer of Code this year. Applications start on the 17th of March. At the moment, I put up the projects from last year's ideas page on the wiki page, but they are open to be taken by mentors. Feel free to add your name to the mentors. There is a lot of interest among students about Google Summer of Code for openSUSE, and I have got many mails from prospective students about the ideas that we have on the ideas page. I think we should spend some effort into making our participation successful. Our Ideas Page: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC_ideas Please put up your ideas / make yourself available for mentoring on the ideas that we already have on the page. -- Regards,. Hm what use is this? Adding projects from last year? Now we have a bunch of outdated, already implemented or mentorless projects on the page. I don't get it. Hi The idea was to add the projects which were not taken up last year. Also, as we might not find mentors for all the projects (and some mentors were not available), I left the option for people, who are willing to mentor for those projects to add themselves to the list. While submitting the application to Google, I will remove the projects on the ideas page that do not have any mentors. On Mon, Mar 11, 2013 at 4:05 PM, Henne Vogelsang <hvogel@opensuse.org> wrote:

I actually thought it would be easier to come up with more ideas, but as I dig around it seems like everything is so complete it's hard to come up with any that haven't already been done and implemented. I'll try a little harder over the next couple of days. What would you say our current ratio of mentors to students is? -- God bless ! That would be 1:1 or even 2:1 But to make the competition stiffer, Google actually makes sure that 1 in 3 students is selected

Which is completely understandable, but you have to feel bad for those students who don't get to participate. I think we could use more mentors out there and that's one of my goals after graduation. Students at my university are always clamoring for more mentors but there seems to be a lack of people willing to do it. -- God bless ! Well, GSoC is nice and all but from a mentor perspective it's often not very fulfilling. I observe that a streak of bad GSoC cycles, which is likely to happen, tires most of our mentors out. And, as always, I think that you have to talk to mentors directly if you want something. I haven't seen that happening until now. Maybe the openSUSE Team can help here?
