[opensuse-project] some curious questions :-)
Hello Sorry, but I´m curious:-) Here i have found this amazing mockup http://en.opensuse.org/Image:Os103-installer-mockup.png Quote from http://en.opensuse.org/Pimp_My_Installer "The installer is the first thing potential openSUSE users see, and an immediate 'pleasant surprise' effect is very important..." So, can i expect changes in installer for new opensuse 10.3 like this?Because it is fantastic and that green color very fits. And here http://en.opensuse.org/UX/Installation is mentionted Easy to use, Quick installationtime, Pleasing look and feel. So, are you going to plane reduce install steps?Because openSUSE has the most install steps. For what I know/heard, the look of the installer you found won't be implemented for 10.3 due to technical reasons. I'm not a developer, but I find those steps necessary. Thanks to them, OpenSUSE is fully configured, with network, printers and other hardware fully working. I think this is one of the strong points of openSUSE. A new user might find these steps boring, but at the same time he's driven step-by-step through the configuration of his system, and potentially he's going to enjoy it better. Overall, the screenshot is doable, and would be pretty much limited to hacking yast-qt/gtk. It does requires quite some work, and the collaboration of an artist. We could fallback to the current skin for smaller resolution. For the transparency effect, you don't need 3D, just 3 backgrounds. Frame-less, transparent dialogs could be the most tricky part. We could also throw in some animations: when advancing steps, or on the transition between the steps pane to show help. This is of course mostly a marketing thing, the installer looks don't affect its usability. That's why I guess it has changed little in that department. Cheers, Ricardo

It might. In fact, I'm convinced it does. For once, every software modification, even a cosmetic one, inserts new bugs and problems. Then, increasing visual gadgetry means increasing the memory required (already big, IMO), and probably the cpu requirements too. If you need 3D then you need 3D support right from the start with automatic detection and configuration, with a method to manually bypass it if needed/wanted. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Which steps do you find irrelevant? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
