[opensuse-project] openSUSE Weekly News
Hi, I didn't think we could avoid having something like a weekly newsletter for much longer, so I've put together some stuff for the first one over at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE_Weekly_News/1 I'm hoping to publish it this Wednesday with a news.o.o post. How you can help! = Feedback. = I'd really appreciate any feedback on the newsletter. What you think will work/won't work. Suggestions, etc. = Help contributing to sections = * "Tips and Tricks" could be a nice section, but I can't think of anything to have in it for this week. * In the Press. Seen any decent stories about openSUSE in the press lately? Please add them th ere. * Forum news. I'd really like to get updates on the communities in the fora, so if you think you can help with this please let me know! * Help writing the next one :-) Note that the point of the weekly newsletter is to not undermine or lessen the amount of stories that we get on news.o.o. I think the amount we get there is great. The point is to cover all the extra details and have a single weekly digest for all extra things in-and-around openSUSE. Kind thoughts, -- Francis Giannaros http://francis.giannaros.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

news_letter_? this is a freakin' book! :-) Very good, and covers really everthing(?) ...

like "how to fix the broken online update of bla.rpm"? How will you maintain it? Yes, the effort is very commendable! So here's a suggestion; how about a series of informal awards? Flamewar of the Month, Factory Regression of the Month, Most N00b-proof IRC Channel Volunteer of the Month, etc.? Just to keep things light-hearted. - -- http://www.DonAssad.com jabber ID: josef.assad@gmail.com Please consider the environment; do you really need to print out this e-mail? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4-svn0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFHSuxjFcf72sjD2+QRAqu3AJsErf8wALBmEKqUfpcOnYq4rymgYACeLXXn S/Ko1wqedEbhNC2ETkSDC5k= =pZkh -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I, as I'm sure others do too, browse www.lxer.com often for links to good articles related to Linux. There's always a weekly Fedora newsletter or weekly Ubuntuu newsletter. It was always a bit disheartening not to see one for openSuse. Having this newsletter is great, and getting it linked via lxer.com could really help boost awareness/attention to openSuse. -- ---Bryen--- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Yeah. There's a lot going on, even in quieter periods =)

Sure, or "try out this cool new thing".
How will you maintain it?
Just make a new newsletter each week with more info. Trying to get the template sorted (which it pretty much is), then it will be easier for people to maintain different sections, or for others to help if they have 1-2 mins too, in the future, like you mentioned. well. Probably. but it needs to be defined from respect to news.opensuse.org, not have to do the same work twice. (some sort of automatic generation? Most stuff from news.o.o should be in the 'Announcements' section. In the weekly newsletter, this would typically consist of a snippet of the news.o.o article, and it links to it -- so there's no duplication there. So does that mean you're volunteering, Pascal? No, wait - I can see the headline now: "Guru Site Down Due to Maintainer Working 24/7 on Newsletter - Millions in Agony!"

I could help. The one thing I would suggest is to trim it down somewhat. I just got finished reading my NetBeans weekly newsletter. It only had four items on it. Much more digestable. The newsletter currently up on at http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_Weekly_News/1 has way more information than is easily digested. Of course, a current news item on the opensuse website would be nice. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

A million and one; you forgot me.

+1. Extending that idea, how about a weekly "openSUSE in 100 words"? - -- http://www.DonAssad.com jabber ID: josef.assad@gmail.com Please consider the environment; do you really need to print out this e-mail? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4-svn0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFHS0EZFcf72sjD2+QRAoV1AJsFjV/tLpDIqy8TpGP7ofYll7iYWACcDUsG lRh4nT+hE7L4ag0NJLXGe0g= =57W6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

I would also like to add it to the en.opensuse.org frontpage (instead of the "Featured Article" section). Only one, featured article is good idea, but article should be kept for some time, say month, and then replaced with new, or added another if something pops up that deserves place before month goes by. IMHO, news should have more prominent place, as it will be pointer to something that is changing, ie. give some dynamic to web page and project. Maybe even before 'Getting openSUSE'. -- Regards, Rajko. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org
