[opensuse-project] Please release openSUSE 12.3 on Blue-Ray disc (ISO image)
Hello, I would like to request to release openSUSE 12.3 Blue-Ray Disc (BD) ISO image. It is beneficial for several reasons: 1. It will make openSUSE easier to use in virtualization environments. (the ISO will serve as a static offline mirror image for multiple openSUSE VMs) -- even for those, who lack actual BD hardware. 2. It will make for an easier and faster install, for those who have BD hardware. 3. It will finally allow to put whole repository of openSUSE into a single medium. Surely it will take extra space on the mirror, but: Only few mirrors are needed, because the amount of actual downloads in this format is expected to be 'limited'. BD penetration rate is still in single-digits. 3 BD images needs to be created: 1. Bootable openSUSE-12.3-i586 2. Bootable openSUSE-12.3-x86-64 3. Source code openSUSE-12.3 (for offline archive reasons) Thanks in advance, -- -Alexey Eromenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks in advance,
Why not create a script that downloads the DVD, adds further packages from the factory repo and burns it on a BD? I have 0 interest in another set of 20GB ISOs. And it is not beneficial for several other reasons: · Not many people have blue ray hardware, even less burners. · Not many people have the network capacity to download such an image · Probably not many mirrors will give that many space to mirror them. On the other hand, you may request that someone with the knowledge creates a script (or scripts) to download and create locally such an image so that you can deploy it. That would be doable. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Hello,
I would like to request to release openSUSE 12.3 Blue-Ray Disc (BD) ISO image.
Did you check some numbers and use cases before issuing a "request"[1]? I would say no. What are sizes of online repos? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 12.2 repo is 17.2 GB. (This one can go to BD, as it does not change.) Update for 12.2 is right now 27.7 GB, for all architectures: * 64 bit is 4 GB. * 32 bit is 3.2 GB. * noarch is 4.7 GB. * src is 14.9 GB. * nosrc is 20.8 MB. (This one can't go on a BD as it is changing all the time.) In other words, for those that need all of the repos for offline consumption, BD iso will solve only a smaller part of a problem. The bigger, updates, will anyway will be delivered as periodically updated local copy of online repos. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- What is a difference between iso and copy of respository: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The only thing that makes iso file special is ability to boot a system and have few utilities that are used for installation. Beyond that it is the same repo as the online one. In other words, instead of having 2 repos, one BD iso and another copy of online update repos, why not use only one local copy of all repos that you need located in one tree, and existing NET install iso for installation. No additional work is needed and it works exactly the same way as it would work with BD iso. All you need is one script that will create copy of only those repos that you need, nothing else. This will save you at least download time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Who actually needs all software? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Whole distribution is collection of software that can serve: * office (office suite) * IT departments (servers, security, maintenance) * entertainment (games, media players) * software developers (almost any language) * digital artists (raster, vector, 3D) * scientific research computation (R) and more. Do you know anyone that is skilled in all of those areas and will run all that software on his workstation? I don't. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- What users will serve BD iso? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BD iso will serve only those: * that have so little skills that they can't copy online repos to BD and use that and NET iso to install system * have very little skills, but somehow need all software that openSUSE offers * have no Internet, but somehow have access to almost unlimited downloads [2] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] Request is a wrong word as there is no legal or moral ground for the other side that they must respond to you request in any way, even if that is declining request. [2] With my Internet access I can make copy of online repos, but I never did it. I don't need all software there. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
