Re: [opensuse-project] How we will use the GSoC money
Looks like we have 3 very good proposals on the table: 1) purchasing SSDs for OBS 2) a Packman server. 3) use the money to sponsor our mentors to come to the openSUSE conference...
Then put the proposals up and have a members only vote. (I do think this should be members only.)
I'd like the Mentors to weigh in with their preferences since the money will be a result of their efforts. Alan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

If I'm not mistaken, OBS team suggested memory might be better to improve OBS performance than SSD. -- Frederic Crozat <fcrozat@suse.com> SUSE -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

1) As mentioned by Frederic, Memory is more likely a better fit for OBS, but getting any additional hardware would be great providing it can be put to use. 2) Now Packman may not have a great deal of love with some people in the project, but as a user of their packages I would love to see some acknowledgement and love from the openSUSE for their tireless love and affection. I do see however a potential issue here, from a legal perspective. IANAL so I could be very mistaken in my thinking, but the way software law is, especially in the US, doing any corporate sponsorship for them may potentially open openSUSE/SUSE (and their new corporate governors) to legal implications. Something that no-one wants. If we can't officially sponsor Packman from these funds, what about having a collection box at the conference? This way SUSE has no involvement with providing them funds, and the community has a real chance to help out (putting our money where our keyboard clicks are). 3) As a co-mentor for GSOC this year, personally I would rather see the money go to use for the wider community. Most, not all, of the mentors this year are employees so hopefully their respective team managers can "sponsor" them to the conference. Sure seeing those community members that are mentors get sponsorship would be great, but hopefully they could be accounted for in the conference sponsorship budget with some priority. I thought Adrian said that memory was more useful than SSDs for OBS? My vote as a mentor is 50% of the money for "whatever helps OBS" and 50% of the money for "whatever helps Packman", since they're both extremely important parts of openSUSE. -- Matt Barringer, Software Engineer SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, DE GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg)

A good cross desktop, pro linux infrastructure sponsoring target would be the Common Printing Dialog (CPD)[1] at LF[2]. CPD is a carefully designed API to be implemented by toolkits for a more native look & feel and HIG and so on. Nearly all applications and levels of users need printing dialogs to work easy, intuitive and not reinventing the wheel each time newly. kind regards Kai-Uwe Behrmann -- developing for colour management www.behrmann.name + www.oyranos.org [1] http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/commonpri...
