[opensuse-project] Get Involved! openSUSE community meeting 2006-12-16 18:00GMT
This is a reminder of Saturday's Community meeting (which also originally didn't go to the list here). Information below as provided by Benjamin Weber: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Details: Date: Saturday - 2006-12-16 Time: 18:00 GMT Location: irc.freenode.net #opensuse-community Explanation: This meeting is primarily organised for, and run by openSUSE community members who are not employed by Novell/SUSE. This meeting is not a status meeting, Status meetings are primarily communication to and from @suse.de folk. The aims of the meeting are to: - Inform (of existing community participation.) - Encourage (further community involvements through practical suggestions.) - Enable (said involvement with further meetings & connecting resources.) The meeting is planned for a Saturday as this seems to be the best day to allow as many people as possible who do not work for Novell/SUSE to attend. A core group of people have already agreed to attend. It would be great to have as many people as possible attend. Whether you have any interest in participating in the project in any capacity, or are simply interested in what others are doing. It would be good to feedback on the results of this meeting at the status meeting on 2006-12-20. However, most of those involved with organising this meeting are unable to attend status meetings due to timing. Agenda below: --- Agenda: - Introduction/Purpose of meeting. - Overview of a selection of existing projects with opensuse community involvement, and how others can get involved. - opensuseupdater (Narayan Newton) - Translation (Martin Schlander) - Packaging (Pascal Bleser) - Build Service clients (Jonathan Arsenault) - Package Search (Benjamin Weber) - Perhaps more, time permitting. If you want to talk about a project you are involved with let me know, or reply to this thread. - Brainstorming session to concoct achievable projects that would directly benefit openSUSE. Please come with ideas if you have any. Aim for projects requiring varying skillsets. Results can be populated on http://en.opensuse.org/Tasks . Some ideas to kick off discussion: - Some ideas on http://en.opensuse.org/Tasks and http://en.opensuse.org/Feature_Wishlist already. - Extensions to pre-existing projects mentioned in the first part of the meeting. - YaST module UI cleanup [1] - FAQ [2] - One click repository adding + Package install [3] - Hopefully many more to be gathered before and during meeting. - Organisation - Exchange names/contact details with any who are interested in helping with a particular suggestion. - Plan dates for subsequent specialized meetings to persue any projects with significant interest. - Set preliminary date for next community meeting. - Assign task of writing minutes. - Assign task of updating wiki tasks/projects page with results of this meeting. - Assign task of giving feedback on the results of this meeting at the next status meeting. -AOB --- [1] Certain modules in YaST are in need of user interface improvements to make their core functionality accessable to inexperienced users, This breaks down into several tasks for those with varying abilities/time. - Gather feedback about current modules, Identify core use-cases for modules. - Design/Mockup improved UI to better enable these core use-cases. - Gather feedback on suggested changes. - Make suggested changes. Requires: Users, Designers/Artists, Developers [2] There are innumerable existing howtos, tutorials, and support articles all over the place, on opensuse.org and in other places. Some superb, others less good. Many of the very most frequently asked questions touch areas of questionable legality and cannot be hosted on opensuse.org. It would be very beneficial to have a FAQ covering a few of the very most frequently asked questions and a "Best practice" consistent answer to each of the top n questions. They would cover not the easiest way for the support person to fix the issue with an obscure command, but the very easiest way for the user to accomplish their goal (& how they might discover it on their own). Illustrated with appropriate media, Text,Screenshots,Screencasts etc as appropriate. This is a lot more work than it might sound, but it is something that many people would be capable of helping with. Entails: Discussion & Planning to come up with the top questions & easiest way to solve each question. High level of maintenance to keep current (See constant changes in best way to install nvidia driver etc) Requires: People experienced with support in Real Life/Forum/IRC etc; Good language skills; Translators [3] I blogged about this after this meeting was planned (http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/bweber/entry/next_generation_package/). ------------------------------------------------ Kind thoughts, Francis Giannaros.

I think you'll engender more support, or at least less annoyance, if you trim quotes when you reply. You're more than welcome to do so. See you in #opensuse-community on saturday at 18.00 GMT (19.00 CET). It might be a good idea if you show up a bit early to give us time to coordinate and such. Hello all, We could use some help with the http://en.opensuse.org/Education project. Help with all aspects would be appreciated. I have included in the text of the site some goals. I'd like to ask that people with RPM building , PHP programming, postgresql, LDAP, and installation script experience , i.e. manipulating config files during the install process, please contact us. Schools all over the world could use help mainstreaming their records keeping process so that students can have the benefit of those records and their achievements, should they be in a position to go on to college. Shouldn't it be as easy as possible for students to have access to computers and the possibilities they provide. Wouldn't it be nice for some rural school district to be able to build a small network based on OpenSUSE and LTSP, that hosts all student management, course delivery and testing services as well as provide demographics, achievement and testing records that are recognized world wide? All these tools exist in opensource today, what is missing is the distribution to host them, together we can solve this issue. Topics for volunteers: 1) creating a complete installation system for Centre 2) adding LDAP to Centre 3) creating a "databridge" to Moodle 4) anything I haven't thought of yet James --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Hello all, We could use some help with the http://en.opensuse.org/Education project. Help with all aspects would be appreciated.
It is probably at this stage important to get the name right and also discuss (define) the scope. If I have understood correctly we are talking about Installation software patterns and an extra repository (or add-on cd) to provide software for the educator. Is it envisaged that this will include the desktop similar to the ideas of Edubuntu? Or are we just talking School Administration? I personally think that the two should be linked, even if the initial push looks to be for the admin side. It should probably be part of a total comprehensive Education solution ie you would have admin or server component and desktop component of something like: openSUSE Education openSUSE Scholar openSUSE Academia openSUSE Learn eduSUSE eSUSE SUSE-Edu Pflodo Peter Flodin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

" The direction is indeed to have this "add-on" cd that works as a part of all three SUSE environments. (a total vertical sales solution approach) first: as a set of "install Patterns" for OpenSUSE that include both desktop and server\edu-administration materials. second: as set of patterns to make SLED more education centric. third: as a set of patterns to make SLES more education management centric. With OpenSUSE we get a chance to "reach the world" by keeping this approach in mind , we should build the cd to minipulate the build process to produce one machine that is both desktop\ltsp and adminstrative, giving even the poorest of schools the ability to transmit student records electronically, even if it's on a floppy. With the SLE variants we should be thinking about specific network functions i.e. will this be the SLED\LTSP box or the SIS server , the CMS server , the LAS server, the internet gateway, the website, the e-mail server, will there be M$ boxes on the network, etc. Remembering that a lot of schools have money for technology but it's limited and the persons in charge are more likely to be technology passionate educators , not technologists who are passionate about education. (I, being the latter and still rather rare). you wrote: " It should probably be part of a total comprehensive Education solution ie you would have admin or server component and desktop component of something like: openSUSE Education openSUSE Scholar openSUSE Academia openSUSE Learn eduSUSE eSUSE SUSE-Edu " This is correct, however I don't quite get all the names, are you thinking that a separate ISO be created for each of these or suggesting an overall project name? Should we create a voting area on the project name? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

The openSUSE for Schools looks fine, but as Peter noted, it is not clear what part it will cover, administration or education process, or it will contain both. Although software probably can fit on single CD it would be better to make it separate patterns. One of ideas that worked before is to define what software and documentation should be included: - for school administration: financial, personal files, correspondence, inventory, planning, ... - education process: tests, grades, lectures, communication with students, remote access, planning, ... - software maintenance: instalation, configuration, upgrade, removal, ... - computer safety practices: instructions, lectures, enforcement, ... - data security: access rights management, backups, recovery procedures, ... I can't even imagine all that is necessary, and that is the case with most of the people that will help, but have some start point. Word from people involved in various parts of education will be more than helpful to define goals and attract more interest Next would be to search the software that can help to accomplish above, make some test configuration and let actual users to decide what will fit the best. One of missing facts is statistics about technology level of used equipment. Blindly assuming some will be shooting in the dark. Do you have some resources that can give us the answer on this question? Having above will help us to focus effort on specific software and initiate interest to develop missing. There is a lot of guys out there that are developing n+1 editor (or whatever) , maybe we can attract them by opening projects on sourceforge.net, for instance. -- Regards, Rajko. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-project+help@opensuse.org

Yes sorry the names were just my mind doing some idle cycles for the proposal of one name for the project, not different components.
