[opensuse-project] A proposal for moving forward

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 So there's been a lot of bikeshedding about moving forward, but not really any concrete proposals... so lets get this party started. In general, we have proven we're great at building the tools around building a distro, so lets leverage that as far as we can, take advantage of SUSE Elements for as much combined effort as we can, and make sure we're all having a lot of fun. ( Do what you want with this, it's just a set of ideas. ) (1) Tumbleweed is tumbleweed, and tumbleweed works. Don't change a thing about it, but encourage package/product maintainers to start working in OpenQA, so we can (continue to) have the most stable rolling GNU/Linux distro available. (2) Transition openSUSE packages over to Elements, up to X, but not including DEs or GUI apps. Lets take advantage of the situation to create more compatibility, and reduce redundant package maintenance on things that should be our stable foundation anyway. (3) openSUSE releases aligned with SLE GA & SP releases. Since we're building on SUSE Elements, it makes sense to use that as a release roadmap. (4) Re-spin openSUSE with Kernel::Stable For those that want a current vanilla kernel instead of the SUSE kernel, make it easy. Release on the same course as Tumbleweed: pkg update -> openQA -> release (5) Encourage DE project maintainers to Re-spin & release on major updates. GNOME 3.16 is stable? Release the openSUSE GNOME Live disc with 3.16. Plasma 5 is default? Release an updated openSUSE KDE image. Like the Kernel::Stable discussion, add the [project]::Stable repos to the image, run it through openQA, and release it. - -- James Mason Technical Architect, Public Cloud openSUSE Member SUSE jmason@suse.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SUSECon 2015: Register at susecon.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJVS6bfAAoJEBs5UYhsRJAjcggH/3TegmbbqJ3EkQbzoQ57rpq6 rtNZXUtsUE6aj4WiZww1gu/byYX5zOjDSmkIGsUPUoseurqNe2WM5Z9zJ7AIqrwo dssN84T/5UXKYOb/PZK4i37afdmS1Qeoa2z414wfRJzEjv9ELNQQ+zOoYluIULbH ebxAeKyOvjm4nIZ/mNWmYitV3BO4ZN3pFDJcGxZk1mlV9gMhefr4j2vIrKXrtzX5 jfoaEtQWC2bjpZyfo8CO/dtGjrcT6+jsPp0q4VK7LGBneY73Twn/elVxln2UNCU5 UQlBgHqf9rtdrZ7S8913GJctNcc8fvAQeOqAnFsGWI1paGQI3ijp8yiDllGXkv8= =GHQf -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

You keep repeating "SUSE Elements". I'm wondering if I'm the only one who doesn't know about that thing and what it means? My Google Fu also failed on that keyword. It is a name given to the SLE sources released recently to OBS by SUSE. Sincerely, Bob Martens Martin Luther College Webmaster/Technician http://mlc-wels.edu

Not quite. Elements is the name mistakenly used for the project for the SLE sources in OBS. At the moment the project has no special name. It has been referenced as "Core", "Cornerstone", and "Elements". But none of those have passed through all the gates. For now it is a project that shall not be named ;) Later, Robert - -- Robert Schweikert MAY THE SOURCE BE WITH YOU Public Cloud Architect LINUX rjschwei@suse.com IRC: robjo -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJVTOxzAAoJEE4FgL32d2UkGegH/3HODl+s+PA8WGLhttdHk1zZ jis49883ARWw+JXIFHDkT9YkWVcy9db9IlMiS6SrrxacEkjk7ZNRk62R4gLqjJ6g ejrzxcAKQ8B/PCH+RB0xyIsftC4aYhOf99VJqiv9f1/X+Wv+hKkmgQucQkVF2KBh f1LJZQCNeIihmAOcxaC2zPHvsk+2Jl3famNvfVcfXPyVWCsRJ9ao6NmdVb3l1s/8 sedKamJJUmt1Nu6gZN+CO6FGQT3CyuzCsYX9kyoq1mNOvGfBKXBz7L4I3Zd+7UjY BwNB3a/phL37SDsV8AIwIokbclvluCPnwJ1gUngl0HiQ9vHsd/cs2Qcld/mP7oY= =TITg -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks for the clarification. I've seen and read so many different names by this time, I'm getting them all mixed up in my head.

I can live with that.

Jan, with all the informations we got about the fact that kernel SLE is more than just it's number (could be interpreted as 13.2 equivalent), will you still block sr? If our reviewers will not accept those changes in case we base the regular release on Elements, then we have another thing to fix . -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Board, fsfe fellowship GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
