In the short term, how close is the project to getting a date window for the 12.2 release? I see the "summit" is 21-23 September and I can't imagine it not being done and committed to media *after* that - it would be a PR nightmare.
We are not basing the Summit on 12.2 release, nor have we done so for any of our openSUSE conferences in the past. In fact, our conferences have such a breadth of topics, that the openSUSE operating system topic is merely just a player at our community conferences. Heck, we don't even distribute DVDs to every attendee at openSUSE Conference, because most people already have it or downloaded it. That probably will be different for openSUSE Conference this year though since we are co-locating with other events, thus opportunity to get DVDs into the hands of a broader audience. I believe Coolo suggested releasing 12.2 around mid-September. Given the turn around time for minting PromoDVDs and shipping them to the U.S., I'm not convinced we'll be able to get them in time for the Summit. It would be *nice* if we could do that though, but definitely we're not planning around it. Postponing the Summit is not an option as we are given free space at the Orlando hotel following the SUSECon conference, which itself is also not based on openSUSE release. We either have the Summit or we don't. However, if you believe there is a correlation between PR and our conferences WRT openSUSE release, the main show is actually our openSUSE Conference in Prague in late October. Summit itself is more of a regional event to get community together that can't/won't be able to attend openSUSE Conference. But still, it will be a great show! :-) As we get closer to the Summit, we'll evaluate what we can do based on the status of 12.2 release. We may consider making DVDs in-house to distribute at the Summit. It would be a small number, thus doable, compared to the very large stash of PromoDVDs we order from a vendor with each release. Again, while I would love to see 12.2 released at Summit, I would not want to put such marketing consideration pressures on the -factory team. Those guys need to focus more on ensuring a good release rather than having us marketeers hanging over their shoulders nagging them. :-) Bryen M Yunashko openSUSE Project -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-project+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, email: opensuse-project+owner@opensuse.org
