We're working on distributing more demo DVDs, but free mail order as Ubuntu does it is very cost prohibitive. What I'd like to offer very soon is an inexpensive way to order the DVD or live CDs. More on that shortly, I hope.
Sell it in a paper sleeve, at costs. Let people pick between the live CDs and the DVDs. Pick the shipping method, quantity and give them a (hopefully small) quote. Even if it does work out at 5-10 dollars, it's not too bad when you consider the fact that they already need the hardware to run it.
You may see something like that... :-)
If I could order a dozen copies for a reasonable prices (I imagine they'd have to be shipped together) I'd be doing right away -- and give them to people with a casual interest in trying Linux. There's something nice about a professionally "printed" CD / sleeve.
Yep. Back in the day, I worked for a now-defunct outfit called LinuxMall.com - we sold the heck out of cheap CDs and I suspect that they contributed greatly to the spread of Linux in the early days before broadband was popular. The boxed sets were the staple of the big distros income stream then, but many people were hesitant to plunk down $30 - $50 for a retail box when they'd never tried Linux... but their next order was often a retail box so they could get the manual. Anyway - thanks for the suggestion. We are looking at a number of ways to spread openSUSE and I expect we'll be doing much more on that front in 2009.
