This is an apparently necessary step before convergence can happen; the community tends to have the resources to explore many (subtly) different technical/social/organizational directions at once before converging. That is actually one of the strengths.
Yes I agree, but I also belive that a structured unit like a company can help out in the process of actually getting a convergence. Either by supporting directly with development resources or by trying to lead the community by asking different teams to work together. I do not believe many projects would take it badly if a leading person from openSUSE-Novell asked if there where any common ground that wold gain all.
