As pointed out by James Ots [1], subpixel hinting is disabled in the SUSE freetype2 packages because it might infringe software patents owned by Microsoft (see [2] for details). As software patents are not applicable nor enforceable in Europe, I could build them with enabled subpixel hinting and host them in my repository (hosted in Germany)... right ?
