Security bugs and show stoppers will be fixed, but added functionality, and code optimizations will stay with newer version. It is nothing to blame developers. If one would backport all stuff from newer version then what would be the difference in a code - none, and then what would be purpose of versions - also none. In other words riding the tide is not that bad idea.
